Legend of the Magnate Episode 13 Recap
Walking Into the Lion's Den
Gu Pingyuan isn't the type to sit around while his fiancée, Bai Yimei, is held captive. He grabs his brother, Gu Pingwen, and heads straight for the rebel camp. They need a cover story. They use a delivery of hemp rope as their ticket in. They meet General Li Cheng. Pingyuan actually respects the guy. The rebel troops are disciplined and sharp.
Things go sideways fast. The Qing army launches a surprise attack on the camp. Li Cheng leads the charge but takes a serious hit. Pingyuan tries to rescue Yimei and the village women during the chaos. It doesn't work. An explosion knocks him out cold.
The Doctor Is In
Pingwen drags his brother to safety. He risked his life to get Pingyuan out. But Pingyuan wakes up and immediately tries to go back. Pingwen is furious. He begs him to stop. Pingyuan ignores him and returns to the camp anyway.
Back at the camp, the rebels are paranoid. They think someone leaked their location. They round up the village women. Yimei steps up. She offers to treat General Li's wounds. The General is in bad shape. Yimei cleans him up but can't pull the arrow out yet. It's too risky. She stays by his side all night.
Pingyuan crashes back into the camp demanding to see the General. The soldiers surround him. He surrenders. Inside the tent, Yimei prescribes herbs using a map as a desk. The Vice General grabs the meds. He warns Yimei that if Li Cheng dies, she pays the price.
A Dangerous Bargain
They lock Pingyuan in a fodder warehouse. Big mistake. He slips his ropes and lights a bucket of gunpowder. The warehouse catches fire. Soldiers scramble to put it out. Pingyuan uses the distraction to storm Li Cheng's tent. He wants Yimei and the women out now.
Li Cheng thinks Pingyuan is a spy. Pingyuan comes clean. He admits he's Yimei's fiancée. He switches to businessman mode. He offers hemp rope and tung oil in exchange for the hostages. Li Cheng takes the deal. He releases the village women. But there is a catch. Yimei stays. He needs a doctor.
The Tragic Backstory
Pingyuan reports back to Yimei's father, Mr. Bai. The old man is crushed. He feels guilty that his daughter is stuck in a war zone. Pingyuan goes home and lies to his mother. He says he was just in the city for business. She buys it. She just wants him to marry Yimei soon.
Pingyuan tries to keep things normal. He buys tea seedlings to fix up the family garden. He visits Mr. Bai again to get special trauma medicine for Yimei.
Back at the camp, Yimei performs surgery. She pulls the arrow out of Li Cheng. It's brutal. He takes the pain like a champ. Later, she tells him to stop fighting. Li Cheng drops his guard. He explains why he rebelled. Corrupt Qing officials killed his brothers and drove his mother to suicide. He had no choice. Yimei starts to sympathize with him.
No Way Out
Pingyuan delivers the supplies and the medicine. He tries to take Yimei home. Li Cheng shuts him down hard. He kicks Pingyuan out of the camp.
Tension builds among the rebels. The Vice General brings bad news about a naval mutiny. He wants to attack Hefei. Li Cheng refuses to disobey his orders to hold the line. He would rather die fighting here. Yimei is terrified by the shouting. Li Cheng has to calm her down.
Pingyuan is back at the tea garden, but his mind is elsewhere. He plans to go back to the camp tomorrow. Mr. Bai stops him. He won't let Pingyuan throw his life away.
