Episode Summary
In this episode, Wu Ximei confesses to the police that Tianbao is not Cao Xiaojun's son. Ni Xiangdong's Bad Day
The episode kicks off with Ni Xiangdong just trying to eat some noodles. His uncle is there, telling him to slow down. Then the uncle's phone rings. It's the cops. They're investigating his car.
The uncle hangs up and looks right at Ni Xiangdong. He asks him if he hit someone with the car. Ni Xiangdong swears he didn't. He says he's being framed, but he can't explain it. You can tell he's frustrated and feels completely trapped.
Wu Ximei's Interrogation
Over at the hospital, Wu Ximei is waiting around. She gets a call from Ni Xiangdong but hangs up fast. The police are right there asking her questions. She lies and says the call was from an insurance company. She even admits she bought an insurance policy for her kid.
This is where it gets good. Meng Chao pulls out an insurance policy. He found it at Ni Xiangdong's place. The policy is for Tianbao. Meng Chao asks her why. After a long pause, Wu Ximei finally breaks. She admits Tianbao is not Cao Xiaojun's son.
A History of Heartbreak
The rest of the episode is basically one long confession. Wu Ximei tells Meng Chao her entire history with Ni Xiangdong and Cao Xiaojun.
The Barbershop Dream
It all started years ago. She was living with both Ni Xiangdong and Cao Xiaojun. She had a dream of opening her own barbershop. The two guys didn't even hesitate. They pooled all their savings to help her. They even brought furniture over from a massage parlor to get her started. Her shop got popular fast. Business was booming, and she was planning to use the money to open an even bigger place.
The Love Triangle Forms
A little while later, Ni Xiangdong picks up Cao Xiaojun from prison on a shiny new motorcycle. That night, they throw a party for him at a club. It also happens to be Wu Ximei's birthday. Ni Xiangdong pulls her onto the dance floor. Cao Xiaojun just watches them, looking completely jealous.
Later, on the way home, Wu Ximei chooses to ride with Ni Xiangdong. The first thing she does when she gets back is count the day's earnings. Cao Xiaojun had bought her a bracelet. He was about to give it to her, but then he sees her walk straight to Ni Xiangdong. They kiss. He just turns and walks away, totally heartbroken.
The First Lost Child
Sometime after that, Wu Ximei tells Ni Xiangdong she's pregnant. They are both incredibly happy. But their happiness doesn't last. Ni Xiangdong's life is too unstable. He asks Cao Xiaojun to take Wu Ximei to a clinic for an abortion. She's devastated the whole way there.
At the clinic, a doctor gives her a pill. She hesitates. Cao Xiaojun is waiting outside, worried sick. She eventually comes out, looking pale and weak. He takes her home. That night, Ni Xiangdong is a wreck. He hits himself and begs Wu Ximei to forgive him. He swears they will have another child when his life is more stable.
The Second Tragedy and a Final Choice
Wu Ximei then tells Meng Chao about the second baby. She had a miscarriage. It happened because Ni Xiangdong was being chased by some gangsters.
She also explains how she ended up with Cao Xiaojun. One day, she was home cooking. Ni Xiangdong got a phone call and was about to leave to do business with some guy named Liang. She told him she was pregnant again. This time, he was cold. He told her to get rid of it again.
That night, Cao Xiaojun found her crying. He overheard her talking to her belly, imagining the baby growing up. The next day, the two of them are sitting under the eaves, watching it rain. Wu Ximei tells him this might be her last chance to ever have a child. She might not be able to get pregnant again. Cao Xiaojun sees how much she wants this baby. He makes a huge decision. He tells her he will raise the child as his own. He will give her the stable life she needs. She looks at him, moved. And that's how it all began.
