Recap: Street Race Showdown (That Wasn't) & A Ghost from the Past
The episode kicks off with Bai Enyu getting word from Tao Jia about a potential clash between two rival groups of young motorcyclists fighting over turf. Naturally, he grabs Lin Zhitao, and they race over to check it out. They arrive at a wide stretch of road, apparently a popular spot for these kids to race and, unfortunately, get into scraps when they trespass on each other's "territory."
Surprise, surprise! Amidst the crowd of young troublemakers, Bai Enyu and Lin Zhitao spot Zuo Hao – Bai Enyu's own nephew! Zuo Hao quickly tries to look inconspicuous when he sees his uncle. With tensions high and a fight looming, Tao Jia steps in with a suggestion to de-escalate: a race! The idea is for the two sides to compete fairly, and if the challenging group wins, they agree to share the road space from then on. The kids, full of youthful pride and ready to prove themselves, immediately agree.
Here's where it gets interesting. Bai Enyu gets ready to race, but Lin Zhitao insists on riding passenger on his motorcycle. Bai Enyu grumbles about the disadvantage – racing with someone on the back? But Lin Zhitao is firm. Then, she throws him another curveball: she tells him not to speed. Bai Enyu is completely baffled. A race where you don't go fast?
Well, it doesn't take long for him to figure out Lin Zhitao's clever plan. As they approach an intersection, guess who's there? Traffic police! Lin Zhitao had noticed them on the way and cooked up this whole "race" idea specifically to lead the reckless kids right into the arms of the law. It wasn't about winning; it was about getting them stopped safely before a real fight broke out.
Since Bai Enyu actually has his license and wasn't speeding (thanks to Lin Zhitao's warning), the police check his documents and let him go. He and Lin Zhitao then watch as the police deal with the underage riders. Lin Zhitao, wanting to minimize the trouble for the kids, even shows her work ID to the officers, asking them to be lenient. Following procedure, the police confiscate the illegally modified bikes and make the kids call their parents. Smart move, Lin Zhitao!
Spoilers: An Old Friend and Lingering Guilt
While waiting for the parents to arrive, Bai Enyu runs into someone unexpected: Chen Junyan. It turns out Chen Junyan is the mechanic who modified the bikes for these kids and now runs his own repair shop. More importantly, back in the day, he and Bai Enyu were super close, like "iron brothers." They drifted apart over the years due to their separate lives, and meeting again under these circumstances is clearly awkward.
The next day, things get heavier. Bai Enyu goes to visit Chen Junyan at his shop. We get a flashback or explanation of their shared past: Bai Enyu used to be a young punk, running with a rough crowd, feeling abandoned with no parents around. One time, Chen Junyan's older brother got his wallet stolen. Bai Enyu, hearing about it, got furious and immediately wanted to rally his buddies to get revenge. Someone tried to talk him out of it, but young, hot-headed Bai Enyu wouldn't listen. He led the group into a fight, but they were overpowered and badly beaten. Tragically, Chen Junyan's older brother was killed in that brawl.
The weight of that event clearly changed Bai Enyu. He carried immense guilt over his impulsive actions that led to the death of his friend's brother. This incident was the catalyst for him cleaning up his act and deciding to live a better life. (The text also mentions Chen Junyan went to prison later for something else entirely, adding another layer to his difficult past).
Back in the present at the repair shop, Bai Enyu tries to convince Chen Junyan to stop modifying bikes for minors, warning him about the danger. Chen Junyan isn't having it, refuses to listen, and the argument escalates into a physical fight between the former friends. Oof.
More Trouble Brewing...
The episode doesn't end there. The kids whose bikes got confiscated by the police aren't just going home quietly. A few of them corner Zuo Hao, blaming him and demanding he compensate them for their lost bikes. Zuo Hao, desperate not to lose his own motorcycle, doesn't exactly take the high road. Instead, he suggests they all do something illegal to make some quick cash.
So, Episode 13 cleverly defused one potentially violent situation only to dig up a deeply painful past connection for Bai Enyu and set the stage for new, potentially criminal, trouble involving his nephew. Looks like things are far from settled! Can Bai Enyu mend things with Chen Junyan? And will Zuo Hao drag himself and others into deeper trouble? Can't wait to see what happens next!
