Double Happiness: Episode 17 Recap & Spoilers

This episode throws viewers straight into the fire with a heart-pounding crisis at a shopping mall, while simmering family tensions boil over elsewhere.

A Parent's Worst Nightmare

The episode opens with Xu Kaixin picking up the twins, Yu An and Yu Le, from their ballet class at the mall. She promises them a treat of burgers and fries, and the girls seemingly agree. However, after a quick whisper between them, they bolt in opposite directions the moment they step out of the classroom.

A frantic chase ensues. Xu Kaixin and the dance teacher split up, with the teacher quickly finding Yu An. But Yu Le is nowhere in sight. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Xu Kaixin tells the teacher to stay with Yu An while she desperately continues the search, placing a panicked call to Mei Chengyi to tell him his daughter is missing.

Mei Chengyi rushes to the mall and meets Xu Kaixin in the security office to review the surveillance footage. He then calls his in-laws for help. The girls' grandfather is initially petty and difficult over the phone, but his wife snatches the phone, and upon hearing Yu Le is missing, the two immediately head to the mall.

Meanwhile, Xu Kaixin’s search leads her to a horrifying scene: Yu Le is being cornered by two women—child traffickers. The little girl is clinging to a railing, crying that she doesn't know them. Without a second thought, Xu Kaixin grabs a broom and charges the assailants, shielding Yu Le. Just in the nick of time, Mei Chengyi arrives and tackles the younger trafficker. Moments later, the grandfather appears and subdues the older woman on a staircase. The crisis is averted as the traffickers are handed over to the police.

The Aftermath and Shifting Dynamics

After giving his statement to the police, Mei Chengyi learns from his father-in-law that Xu Kaixin has already left, still furious about the incident. She doesn't answer his call, prompting him to send a sincere, heartfelt text message apologizing.

Later, at his in-laws' house, Mei Chengyi gets the full story from his daughters. They confess they ran away because of something "Youyou's Dad" had said to them, but after Xu Kaixin's brave rescue, they no longer hold any animosity towards her. The conversation turns tense when the grandfather blames Mei Chengyi for entrusting the children to Xu Kaixin in the first place. Mei Chengyi fires back that he had tried calling them for help, but they didn't answer. The grandmother ends the argument by calling out her husband for his petty stubbornness, which prevented them from being there to help sooner.

Trouble at the Qian Household

In a parallel storyline, Qian Hao and Qin Sulan take their children, Dami and Xiaomi, for a family dinner at his parents' house. The atmosphere is immediately strained by Qin Sulan's blatant favoritism for her grandson, Xiaomi. In response, Qian Hao's father begins pointedly doting on his granddaughter, Dami, escalating the tension.

After the meal, a fight breaks out when the grandfather tries to enter the bedroom to rest, where Xiaomi is sleeping. Qin Sulan blocks his way, and in the ensuing shoving match, she loses her footing and slips to the floor. Qian Hao rushes in and, seeing his mother on the ground, grabs his father with a terrifying look in his eyes. Shaken by his son's expression, the father retreats to another room without a word of explanation. Later, Qin Sulan clarifies to Qian Hao that she simply slipped and that his father didn't push her, leaving Qian Hao looking toward his father's room with a storm of complex emotions.

Sparks of Jealousy and a Budding Romance

On the romance front, Song Ran signs up for a "super VIP" membership at Li Xiaoxiao's matchmaking studio, clearly as a ploy to win her back. However, the plan hits a snag when the studio sets him up on a blind date with a genuinely impressive woman. Watching the two hit it off via security camera, Li Xiaoxiao is consumed by jealousy.

Later, a dejected Xu Kaixin meets up with Li Xiaoxiao for drinks, and the two friends confide in each other about their respective troubles. In an effort to make things right with Xu Kaixin, Mei Chengyi re-adds Li Xiaoxiao on WeChat, hoping she can give him some insight into what he can do to win Xu Kaixin's forgiveness.

The episode ends on a lighter, intriguing note. Youyou returns from a trip to the cemetery and finds Hu Pei practicing Baduanjin, which she dismisses as an old man's exercise. She then notices a Ferrari parked out front and asks who owns the luxury car. When Hu Pei casually claims it's his, she scoffs, pointing out his inexpensive clothes. Without another word, Hu Pei silences her disbelief by coolly pulling out the Ferrari's keys.
