The Litchi Road Episode 19 Recap: The Ghost of the Past
A decade-old fire, a man presumed dead, and a web of conspiracies tightening around the litchi mission—episode 19 of The Litchi Road digs deep into the past to fuel the dangers of the present. As Li Shande gets closer to finding a crucial guide for his impossible task, other powerful figures in Lingnan realize this same man holds the key to a dark secret they all want to control.
A Father's Promise and a Daughter's Gift
While the political storm brews, Li Shande’s life remains anchored by his daughter, Xiu'er. Since his wife Jinniang’s passing, he has poured everything into raising Xiu'er, sending her to the prestigious Neon Embroidery Workshop while he lives frugally. A devoted daughter, Xiu'er often saves the snacks from the workshop for her father. Her skills with a needle have grown immensely, and Li Shande, proud and loving, asks her to embroider a hubing (a type of sesame flatbread) for him. Their quiet, simple life together is a tender counterpoint to the high-stakes drama of the litchi transport mission.
The Cold Case Heats Up
Yun Qing's investigation into the Whale-Riding Tower fire from ten years ago gains momentum. She discovers that just before the fire, a man named A-Tu sold two thousand "Sea Sail Shares" to a certain Boss Lan. Since the company's leader, Hai Hu, died in the blaze, the shares became worthless, leading Yun Qing to suspect that A-Tu was tipped off by the arsonist.
To find A-Tu, Yun Qing dispatches Zheng Ping'an to track down Lan Ge. Initially wary and suspecting Zheng Ping'an is working for his rival He Youguang, Lan Ge is eventually won over by Zheng's clever persuasion. Lan Ge learns that a man named Shopkeeper Feng brokered the original share deal and confronts him. Feng insists A-Tu died in the fire, but under pressure and with the promise of money for his medical bills, he finally breaks his silence.
A Survivor's Story
Shopkeeper Feng recounts his tale: years ago, he came to Lingnan and met A-Tu, who claimed to have shares in the Sea Sail company. Feng introduced him to a buyer, and shortly after the sale, the Whale-Riding Tower went up in flames. A-Tu, horrifically burned but alive, sought refuge with Feng. After recovering, he vanished, warning Feng to keep his survival a secret, or they would both be in mortal danger. The last time Feng saw him was at the Dukang Li Tavern, where A-Tu asked him to deliver medicine to someone in the Dayu Ridge.
Li Shande's Clever Deduction
Meanwhile, Li Shande learns from A-Chai that A-Tu knows the secret paths through the treacherous Dayu Ridge—knowledge that would be invaluable for the litchi caravan.Hearing from Zheng Ping'an that A-Tu was last seen at the Dukang Li Tavern, Li Shande immediately drags Lan Ge to investigate. Near the tavern, Li Shande makes a brilliant observation: he finds a species of large burdock plant unique to Dayu Ridge, unlike the smaller local variety. Recognizing it from his time with A-Chai, he deduces that someone from the ridge has been there recently. Following a trail up the mountain, they discover a secluded house deep in the forest.
Lan Ge knocks, and a young, blind girl answers. She says she lives with her uncle, who is out fishing and will be back in three days. Pretending to be a peddler, Lan Ge asks what she needs, and she requests needles and thread for embroidery. Li Shande, his heart moved, gives the girl a handkerchief embroidered by his own daughter, Xiu'er. He learns the girl is an orphan who was taken in by her "uncle" after wandering to Dayu Ridge. When he asks for a description, she tells him the man's face is covered in scars. Li Shande knows this must be A-Tu. Fearing A-Tu will flee if he returns and finds them, Li Shande makes a pact with the girl to keep their visit a secret, promising to help her find a place at an embroidery workshop and leaving the handkerchief as a token of his promise.
An Alliance Forged in Celebration
Li Shande rushes to tell Su Liang the good news. His timing is perfect, as they are invited to a vibrant wedding celebration for a Dong couple. In a moment of drunken candor, Su Liang confesses that while he initially planned to use Li Shande's status as Litchi Envoy for his own profit, he has come to see that Li Shande is a man destined for great things and now wholeheartedly commits to helping him succeed. The two bond over wine, joining the Dong people in song and dance. For a moment, Li Shande allows himself to dream of his happy life in Chang'an after the mission is complete. Nearby, A-Chai gently warns A-Tong, who has feelings for Li Shande, that their paths will ultimately diverge, as he is bound to return to the capital.
Alliances Shift as the Net Closes
Zheng Ping'an reports A-Tu's location to Yun Qing, who is determined to learn the identity of the mastermind behind the fire. She warns Zheng Ping'an not to share this information with A Mi Ta.
At the same time, the conniving Zhao Xinmin, realizing Governor He Youguang is an unreliable ally, seeks to secure his own future. After a failed attempt to use a honey trap on Zheng Ping'an, he makes a desperate move: he approaches A Mi Ta. Zhao Xinmin reveals his suspicion that He Youguang not only orchestrated the fire but also manipulated A-Tu into selling his shares beforehand. This confirms A Mi Ta's own long-held belief that He Youguang was responsible for the death of her father, Hai Hu, in the fire, though she has never had proof.
A Race to the Truth
Three days later, as A-Tu returns from fishing, multiple factions converge on his small hut. Zhao Xinmin lies in ambush. Li Shande arrives early, waiting patiently. But it is A Mi Ta who gets there first, having her men seize A-Tu. Desperate for answers, she demands to know how her father died. Overwhelmed by the traumatic memory, A-Tu cannot speak. Showing a moment of compassion, A Mi Ta gives him time to compose himself.
The news travels fast. Lan Yu gallops to the Governor's Residence to inform He Youguang, who, realizing the danger, immediately leads his men to intercept A Mi Ta. Yun Qing, also alerted, sends her own people to protect A Mi Ta, setting the stage for a dramatic and explosive confrontation over the long-buried truth.
