The Litchi Road Episode 29 Recap: The Lingnan Gambit

Li Shande finally has the official documents to transport the lychees, but his relief is tragically misplaced. He is a pawn in a much larger, more dangerous game orchestrated by the duplicitous Attendant Yu. Believing Yu to be his savior, Li Shande gratefully accepts the mission to Lingnan, unaware that Yu has already stolen his meticulously crafted transport plan and presented it as his own. Yu's true goal is to leverage the mission for a massive personal profit, a scheme he cleverly sells to the powerful Right Chancellor. Though suspicious of Yu's motives, the Right Chancellor agrees, seeing it as an opportunity to assert his own authority. He assigns both Yu and the sharp-witted A Mi Ta to "assist" Li Shande, setting the stage for a clash of ambitions.

The depth of Yu's greed becomes apparent during the budget meeting. While Li Shande argues for a frugal approach, Yu insists on doubling the proposed budget, citing unforeseeable obstacles. The department heads, recognizing Yu's ploy to skim the surplus and blame any failure on Li Shande, go along with the inflated figures. With the budget approved, Li Shande, deflecting lavish parting gifts from opportunistic officials, races towards Lingnan, his sense of duty blinding him to the conspiracy unfolding around him.

Their arrival in Lingnan is met with a grand, fawning reception from the local official, He Youguang. He Youguang is terrified of A Mi Ta, whom he correctly assumes is there on behalf of the Right Chancellor to scrutinize his affairs. He lays the flattery on thick for Attendant Yu, hoping to curry favor with the man he perceives as a greedy but manageable official. Li Shande, meanwhile, watches the sycophantic display with cold detachment.

The pleasantries are short-lived. During the initial meeting, A Mi Ta immediately seizes control, putting He Youguang on the defensive. She publicly announces that He Youguang, on behalf of the Foreign Merchants' Guild, has generously offered to finance the entire lychee transport operation. Boxed in and publicly acclaimed by Attendant Yu for his "generosity," He Youguang is forced to agree, smiling through clenched teeth.

The power plays continue as Attendant Yu begins a charade of incorruptibility, loudly proclaiming he will accept no gifts from He Youguang. It’s a performance for Li Shande's benefit, a fact not lost on He Youguang and his subordinate, Zhao Xinmin, who correctly deduce that Yu is merely posturing before he makes his real move to drain Lingnan's coffers.

Amidst the political maneuvering, personal anxieties fester. Li Shande’s companion, Zheng Ping'an, is terrified that Attendant Yu will expose his disguise as Ma Guiyun. Meanwhile, the merchant Su Liang is unnerved by A Mi Ta's role representing the foreign merchants, fearing it will disrupt his own business arrangements.

The episode concludes on a somber and foreboding note. Seeking to share a bottle of fine wine from Chang'an with his old friend, Lin Yinu, Li Shande is devastated to learn that he has died. The news hits him hard, a sudden, personal loss that underscores the growing sense of danger and uncertainty surrounding his mission in the treacherous landscape of Lingnan.
