Abyss Dweller Episode 33: A Memory Unlocked

In the latest episode, the stakes for Liang Shuo have never been higher. Held captive and drugged, he faces an interrogation by Takagi Yugi. However, the sedatives only deepen his amnesia, causing him immense pain and rendering him unable to provide any information. This infuriates Mizuho Genxin, who, convinced Liang Shuo is an anti-Japanese operative, detains him despite pressure from Director Li of the Special Affairs Committee. Realizing Liang Shuo is their only hope, Old Tan quickly organizes a rescue mission while also arranging for Xie Nianci's urgent relocation.

The situation escalates as multiple factions vie for control. Director Li, furious that the Japanese are handling an internal matter, dispatches his own men to intercept the vehicle transferring Liang Shuo to the Military Headquarters. Meanwhile, Liang Shuo's loyal subordinates, Da Hu and Lao Bai, decide to launch their own rescue attempt.

During the transfer, a flood of fragmented identities—Qingshuang, the Military-Statistics Bureau's "Shadow," his role at No. 76—overwhelms Liang Shuo. Seizing a moment of chaos, he makes a daring escape, leaping from the moving vehicle. Now a fugitive in unfamiliar Shanghai, he manages to pick his handcuffs with a nail and heads to a pre-arranged location: Victory Park. There, under a maple tree, he unearths a hidden diary, and crucial pieces of his memory begin to surface. His escape solidifies Mizuho's and Takagi's belief that he is the spy known as "Shadow," prompting a city-wide manhunt.

A tense chase ensues. As Japanese soldiers close in on the park, Old Tan's operatives work to extract Liang Shuo and simultaneously rescue Xie Nianci, who gets injured in the process. Liang Shuo briefly reunites with Da Hu and Lao Bai, who cover for him when confronted by Takagi. Exhausted and overwhelmed, Liang Shuo eventually collapses in an alley.

He awakens in a safe house, rescued by Old Tan. His memory is still a wreck, but he recalls the codebook left by Xie Nianci. Using it with a copy of "The Communist Manifesto," he painstakingly deciphers the code, slowly reconnecting with his true identity and beliefs. Just as his past begins to clear, a vital clue emerges from a flashback: the dying words of Lu Xijian were the name "Kobayashi Kazukiyo." This mysterious name becomes the new focus, even as Old Tan informs him that the injured Xie Nianci is being moved to safety in Northern Jiangsu.
