"Our Generation" Episode 6: An Explanation and a Blocked Reunion
The long-standing misunderstanding between Ying Tao and Jiang Qiaoxi is finally cleared up, but not without some drama along the way. As Ying Tao and her friends head back to Qunshan, Jiang Qiaoxi desperately tries to get her attention. Seeing his plight, Qin Yeyun lends him her bicycle to chase the bus. His reckless riding on the highway forces Ying Tao to get off, and the two finally have a chance to talk.
On the bus ride back, Jiang Qiaoxi lays his heart bare. He explains that during the years he was away, he was never able to contact her because his controlling mother had cut the phone line at home. He threw himself into his studies, hoping his good performance would earn him a holiday visit back to Qunshan, but his mother always refused. In a desperate attempt, he ran away from home, even injuring himself slightly while jumping out of a window. His hopes were crushed when his mother intercepted him the moment he arrived in Qunshan, threatening to make him lose his friends forever if he ever tried to contact them again.
With the truth revealed, the ice between them thaws. While Ying Tao admits she can't forgive him just yet, she tells him he can earn it based on his future actions, giving Jiang Qiaoxi a glimmer of hope. Their friends, including Yu Qiao, also learn of Jiang Qiaoxi's difficult situation and no longer hold a grudge, though they all agree to pretend they are still strangers in public to avoid trouble.
Determined to meet properly, Ying Tao asks Yu Qiao to arrange a secret meeting with Jiang Qiaoxi that evening. Yu Qiao cleverly passes on the time and place by pretending to ask Jiang Qiaoxi for help with a math problem. As they prepare for their rendezvous, both Ying Tao and Jiang Qiaoxi take care to dress up. On her way, Ying Tao bumps into a well-dressed Qin Yeyun, who is on her own mission to see Yu Qiao at the basketball court, though Yu Qiao remains completely oblivious to her affections.
Just as Jiang Qiaoxi is about to leave, his mother confronts him again. He tries to stand up to her, but she delivers a devastating threat: if he goes to the meeting, she will have Ying Tao's parents transferred from their jobs, ensuring he will never see her again. Defeated, Jiang Qiaoxi is forced to stay home.
The situation escalates when Jiang Qiaoxi's father returns, leading to a massive argument between his parents that draws the attention of the whole neighborhood. Yu Qiao rushes to inform Ying Tao's family, and her parents go over to intervene. In the ensuing confrontation, Jiang Qiaoxi's father apologizes, and Ying Tao's parents defend the innocence of their children's friendship.
Yu Qiao finds Ying Tao to tell her the meeting is off and walks her home. Seeing her parents emerge from the Jiang household, Ying Tao is overcome with guilt, fearing she has caused them trouble. However, her parents reassure her that she's done nothing wrong.
The episode concludes with Jiang Qiaoxi being taken away by his mother to an Olympiad Math training camp. Seeing her daughter's sadness, Ying Tao's mother offers words of comfort, telling her that while circumstances can't always be changed, true feelings can endure through hardship. In a final scene, Manager Jiang (Jiang Qiaoxi's father) asks Qin Yeyun to pass a message to Ying Tao, but Qin Yeyun sharply retorts that it's Jiang Qiaoxi who is influencing Ying Tao, not the other way around.
