Episode Summary
Shen Wanqing, secretly the agent "White Night," obtains critical intelligence about an impending KMT attack but is gravely ill. An attempt on his life by Gu Yangshan is complicated by their shared past. Shen's contact, Xian Biyun, is killed after confirming the mission, passing the objective to Ding Yi. In a desperate race against time and Japanese signal detectors, Shen's transmission is stopped at the last second by Gu, who then clashes with Ding Yi over whether to kill the unconscious Shen.

A Violent Reunion
A Poison Plot Gone Wrong
The episode opens with Shen Wanqing. He is not doing well. His stomach illness has him vomiting blood in the bathroom. He tries to dull the pain with hard liquor, but it doesn't work.
While he's out, Gu Yangshan sneaks into his house. He plans to poison Shen's tea. But then he spots a pen on the desk. It has the words "Dan Xin" carved into it. Gu recognizes it immediately. He gave that same pen to his respected teacher years ago. This discovery stops him in his tracks.
An Unwelcome Guest
Shen Wanqing gets home. He's sharp. He notices the secret mark he left on his door has been disturbed. He knows someone is inside. He enters quietly and a brutal fight breaks out between him and Gu Yangshan. The room is a wreck.
To get some answers, Gu pretends to give up. On another front, Joseph Needham is at the institute looking for Shen. He learns Shen went home to get something. Needham tries to leave, but Liang Jingyuan stops him. He isn't going anywhere.
Back at the house, Gu Yangshan is tied to a post. He tells Shen that Gu Fuhua sent him on this mission. He also says his teacher is dead. The Japanese killed him. So he wants to know why Shen has his teacher's pen. Shen correctly guesses that Gu is actually Gu Shixian. He then admits he works for the Military-Statistics Bureau. Before he can say more, someone knocks on the door.
The Mission at the Stock Exchange
The Green Light
It's Xian Biyun at the door. She has a cover story. She tells Shen that stocks are crashing and he should sell. This is actually a coded message. She's telling him his daughter Su Su's asthma has improved. He no longer needs to worry about her. He is free to act.
White Night's Identity is Confirmed
Shen Wanqing drives to the stock exchange immediately. Luo Han is tailing him the whole way. Shen goes to a private room on the second floor to meet Xian Biyun. At first, he refuses to admit he is the agent known as "White Night."
Xian Biyun then shows him a photo of his daughter, Su Su. That does it. His expression changes. He finally confirms his identity as White Night and connects with his contact. They start planning their next steps. But Shen's health is failing. He knows he doesn't have much time left. He reveals some shocking intel. He cracked the Sigo cipher. He learned the KMT is planning to attack Huangqiao. After that, they plan to target the New Fourth Army in Northern Jiangsu. This information must get to their organization today. There is no time to waste. They agree to risk sending the transmission from Sanyangli.
Everything Falls Apart
A Tragic Ambush
Xian Biyun walks into the main hall of the stock exchange. Suddenly, Luo Han shoots her. She collapses to the floor, bleeding out. It happens so fast.
At the same time, Shen Wanqing is leaving through a back exit. His illness finally overwhelms him. He passes out inside his car.
A Dying Wish
Joseph Needham arrives at the stock exchange just in time to see Xian Biyun get shot. He is devastated and rushes to hold her. In her final moments, she uses her last bit of strength. She tells Ding Yi that Shen Wanqing is White Night. She explains that Shen has the critical intelligence. She begs Ding Yi to help Shen complete the mission.
A Race Against the Clock
A Desperate Transmission
Shen Wanqing makes it home. He finds Gu Yangshan still unconscious and feels a moment of relief. He goes downstairs to make other arrangements. But Gu was faking. He has been secretly working to free himself from the ropes.
Elsewhere, Yi Aida tells Liang Jingyuan that Xian Biyun was shot. She hopes this will help her redeem herself. She feels she has no other choice but to keep moving forward.
Joseph Needham shows up at Shen's house, acting on Xian Biyun's final request. He speaks the contact code phrase. He wants White Night to hand over the intelligence. But Shen doesn't trust him. He quickly knocks out Ding Yi, who was with Needham. Shen says he won't fall for the trick. He also says the real code phrase has nothing to do with Su Su.
An Unlikely Savior
Time is up. Shen pulls out his telegraph equipment. He desperately tries to transmit the cracked intelligence. A Japanese signal detection truck is already patrolling the area. The tension is unbearable.
Just as the truck is about to pinpoint his location, Gu Yangshan breaks free. He knocks Shen Wanqing unconscious, stopping the transmission. He also saves Ding Yi in the process. Gu worries the signal truck will find them. He wants to kill Shen to eliminate the risk. But Ding Yi stops him. He yells that they can't kill someone who is also fighting the Japanese. Ding Yi then decisively takes the radio equipment. He does this to protect Shen's identity and prevent a bigger crisis.
