A Test of Trust
The Scallion Pancake Incident
So, Ji Bozai gets home. He immediately knows his magical barrier is broken. You can see the murder in his eyes. He expects to find an intruder. Instead, he finds Ming Yi in the kitchen. She's just casually making scallion pancakes.
She puts on a big show of being worried about him. It’s a terrible performance. She’s really trying to hide the fact she was snooping around for the Yellow Millet Dream. Ji Bozai isn't buying it. He gets right up close to her. He whispers something to test her reaction. Her eyes dart around. She can't get her story straight. This just makes him angry.
Kicked to the Curb
Ji Bozai decides he's had enough. He tells Ming Yi she’s boring. He orders Matron Xun to send her packing back to Flower Moon Night. Ming Yi begs to stay. She pleads with both of them. They completely ignore her.
But this is all part of her plan. As she's being forced out, she secretly tells her contact, Twenty-Seven, to spread the news. She wants everyone to know she was thrown out of the Sea of No Return.
Everyone Makes Their Move
Mu Qibai's New Spy
The gossip works perfectly. A physician immortal named Yan Xiao and another immortal, Meng Yangqiu, hear the story. Yan Xiao runs straight to his boss, Mu Qibai. Mu Qibai doesn't waste a second. He orders Yan Xiao to find a new spy to sneak into Ji Bozai's territory.
Ji Bozai's Lie
Ji Bozai, on the other hand, seems to not care at all. His subordinate, Shou Buxiu, reports that Ming Yi is being punished back at Flower Moon Night. Ji Bozai just shrugs it off. He's focused on getting an herb called the Night-Seeing Grass. His faction won a recent competition, and the grass is part of the prize. He tells Shou Buxiu to go collect it.
Just then, Yan Xiao shows up with two attendants. They are obviously here to spy for Mu Qibai. To throw them off, Ji Bozai has to think fast. He lies and says he and Ming Yi had a huge fight. He claims she stormed off on her own.
A Surprise Rescue
Assassins at Flower Moon Night
There's also some drama happening with the royal family. A character named Lady Meng sees her son, Ming Xian, has failed at something. She decides to push her other son, Ming Xin, to become the crown prince. Ming Xin is just as ambitious. He sends assassins to kill his own brother, Ming Xian. The only way he can take the throne is if Ming Xian is dead.
These assassins end up at Flower Moon Night. Meanwhile, a dancer named Zhang Tai defends Ming Yi, saving her from a punishment. But then Ming Yi senses a magical mirror nearby. The power almost makes her reveal her true, non-human form. The assassins see this and go after her.
An Unlikely Savior
Things look bad for Ming Yi. Right when the assassins are about to get her, Ji Bozai appears out of nowhere. The assassins know exactly who he is. They are terrified of him and retreat immediately. He just saved the woman he literally kicked out hours earlier.
Back in the Lion's Den
The Greedy Girl Act
Ji Bozai brings Ming Yi back to his home. The two of them then work together with surprising teamwork. They expose one of the maids as Mu Qibai’s spy and get her thrown out.
Even so, Ji Bozai still doesn't trust Ming Yi. He keeps trying to test her. He even uses his magic, but he can't figure out if she's telling the truth. So, Ming Yi tries a new tactic. She pretends to be deeply hurt by his suspicion. She acts like she's going to leave for good. As she turns to go, she makes sure he sees her clutching a small pouch on her belt.
He falls for it completely. He grabs her and pulls her back. The pouch rips open. Jewelry and expensive trinkets spill all over the floor. These are all things she has stolen. She plays the part of a poor, greedy girl who is just trying to survive. For now, it works. Ji Bozai lets his guard down and allows her to stay.
The Investigation Begins
Ji Bozai isn't a total fool, though. He calls Shou Buxiu. Before he goes to get the Night-Seeing Grass, he has a new mission. He must go to a place called the Water of Cold and Heat. He needs to do a deep background check on Ming Yi. Ji Bozai has to know if she can be trusted. He plans to use her as a shield to distract Mu Qibai’s spies.
The Late-Night Visit
A Seduction Plan Interrupted
Mu Qibai decides he needs to see the situation for himself. He plans a trip to the Sea of No Return. At the same time, Ming Yi is putting the pieces together. She understands the political landscape. The God-King is sick, and his daughter, Princess Tianji, can't inherit the throne. The king's brother, Mu Qibai, was the obvious choice to be the next ruler. But then the princess found Ji Bozai. He turned their kingdom into a major power. The princess wants to marry him, which makes him Mu Qibai's biggest rival. Ming Yi realizes she is a useful pawn in this game.
Her contact, Twenty-Seven, thinks the Yellow Millet Dream is hidden on Ji Bozai himself. This gives Ming Yi an idea. She spends the night studying a spiritual cultivation manual. Later, she slips into Ji Bozai's room wearing a very sheer gown. She's about to try and seduce him.
A Dangerous Conversation
Before she can make her move, she hears a visitor. It's Mu Qibai. He has arrived for a late-night visit. Ming Yi dives into a hiding spot. Ji Bozai and Mu Qibai sit down for drinks. Mu Qibai acts casual. He makes small talk. But then his questions turn serious. He starts asking Ji Bozai about the Yellow Millet Dream.
