A Dinner Party Full of Lies

The Courier Who Wouldn't Leave

So, you remember Zhu Feng. She was the accountant sent to Taiwan to be Wu Shi's courier. Her cover was almost blown. Wu Shi told her to get out of town. He even asked for a more experienced replacement. He wanted Nie Xi to get her a pass so she could leave Taiwan for good.

But Zhu Feng is still here.

We learn why pretty quickly. She saw the new courier, a woman named De Ying, get cornered. De Ying's ID was bad. Instead of being captured, she jumped into the sea and died. Zhu Feng realized no one else was coming to help. She decided to stay and finish the job herself.

Her plan is bold. She uses an alias, Yin Xuefen, to befriend Wu Shi's wife, Wang Bikui. It works a little too well. The two of them hit it off immediately. They become best friends who tell each other everything.

An Awkward Family Dinner

Nie Xi drives Wu Shi home from work one evening. They walk in and get a huge shock. Zhu Feng is in the kitchen. She's laughing and making dumplings with Wang Bikui. Both men thought she was long gone. Now she's in Wu Shi's house, acting like she belongs there. Zhu Feng plays dumb and pretends she doesn't know Wu Shi at all.

Wu Shi pulls his wife aside. He needs to know exactly how she met this woman. At the same time, Nie Xi corners Zhu Feng. He demands to know why she hasn't left. She tells him she wants to stay on as the courier. Nie Xi warns her this is a terrible idea. If her identity gets exposed, all of Wu Shi's work will be for nothing. Zhu Feng promises she'll leave soon.

Later, Wu Shi tries to get Zhu Feng out of his house. But his wife insists she stay for dinner. Wang Bikui even cooked a huge Fujian-style meal. Wu Shi has no choice but to agree. He sends Nie Xi to help in the kitchen. Then he takes Zhu Feng out to the garden for a private talk. He orders her to leave Taiwan now.

Zhu Feng argues she should wait for a new courier. Wu Shi refuses. She then points out that another official, Duan Tuizhi, saw her with his wife. It's a perfect cover. Wu Shi still won't budge. Finally, Zhu Feng tells him the hard truth. The replacement courier is dead. There is no one else.

Just then, Wu Shi's son, Wu Jiancheng, gets home from school. He sees his dad talking with Zhu Feng. He also notices she's been crying. During dinner, the son asks her why she was crying in the garden. Zhu Feng quickly makes up a story about thinking of her late husband.

Infiltration and Espionage

Gu Zhengwen's Elaborate Trap

Gu Zhengwen is moving his own pieces around the board. He learns that Nie Xi's wife has been getting very close to an American named Pete. He has photos of them together and gives them to Li Qing. This feels like blackmail material for later.

His main focus, though, is on Weng Lianwang. Weng has been starving himself in custody. Gu decides the time is right to put his plan into motion. He wants Weng to impersonate a man named Zhuang Achen. The goal is to get inside Lin Yiliang's communist cell. A man named Liu Kangfu is brought in to help sell the story. Gu promises him a job at the Secrecy Bureau if he pulls it off.

The plan is basically a piece of street theater. Gu has his agents, led by Yu Xiaonan, chase Weng Lianwang through the streets. Weng runs right for Lin Yiliang's business, the Sanrong Trading Company. Just as he gets close, Yu Xiaonan orders his agents to pull back. Only Liu Kangfu is left.

Liu shoots and wounds Weng. Weng hides, then gets the drop on Liu and kills him. Lin Yiliang hears the gunshot and comes outside. He finds the dead agent and the wounded man Weng is pretending to be.

Lin "rescues" Weng and brings him inside. He questions him, and Weng's story holds up perfectly. Lin is completely fooled. He hides Weng in a warehouse to recover from his injury. He promises to send him to their secret base in three days.

The Air Force Base

Wu Shi is trying to figure out what the military is up to. He has Nie Xi invite his brother-in-law, Wang Jifu, over for dinner. Wang Jifu works for the air force. Wu Shi tries to get information out of him. Wang Jifu doesn't know much. He only says the pilots are training more intensely.

Wu Shi tells Nie Xi to find a way to get a look at the air force base himself. After dinner, Nie Xi gets Wang Jifu drunk while playing pool. He then drives the blackout-drunk officer back to the base. By using Wu Shi's name, Nie Xi gets past the front gate guards.

While this is happening, Weng Lianwang sends a message to Gu Zhengwen. He reports that he's scheduled to go to the base in three days. Gu can't have that. He needs Weng to stay put. He tells Yu Xiaonan to find a way to keep Weng at the trading company.

Three days pass. Weng gets ready to leave. But Lin Yiliang notices a lot of new security checkpoints have popped up around the city. He worries it's too risky for Weng to travel. He tells Weng to stay at the trading company and help out for a while. The trap worked.

Nie Xi's trip to the air force base was a bust, though. He drove around but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Wu Shi is back to square one. He's determined to find out what the air force is planning.
