Spoiler Alert
The Deals and the Double-Crosses
This episode splits its time between two very different, very dangerous places. You have the back-alleys of Hong Kong and the paranoid halls of power in Taiwan.
In Hong Kong, the communists are scrambling. They need a massive shipment of penicillin before the Battle of Kinmen kicks off. The problem is they are short on cash. So, they task Zhu Feng, a finance manager, with a tough job. She has to get the medicine without the money.
Her plan is pretty clever. She goes to a horse race to meet a supplier, Boss Jiang. She gives him a hot tip on a horse, which he wins. Then she makes her real pitch. She wants to trade soybeans for his penicillin. He actually agrees. But things get complicated fast. A liaison named Deying discovers that Jiang's British boss is raising the price by 30 percent. He was also seen meeting with KMT officials. This whole deal is getting messy.
Welcome to Taiwan. It's Awful.
Then we jump over to Taiwan with our main guy, Wu Shi. He has just arrived with his family, and it is not a happy reunion. KMT secret police are everywhere, arresting people. Wu Shi's own son, Wang Xuecheng, is disgusted by it. He screams at his father, calling him a liar. Wu Shi just has to take it. He can't tell his family he's a deep-cover communist spy.
To make matters worse, his new next-door neighbor is Duan Tuizhi. Duan is a high-ranking official in the Ministry of National Defense. His real job is to spy on Wu Shi's family. Wu Shi's wife, Wang Bikui, already regrets moving. The whole situation is a powder keg.
The Real Work Begins
An Old Friend and a New Mission
Wu Shi can't trust his family or his neighbors. He finds an ally in an old friend, He Sui. He Sui is a respected government official. He is also a secret communist. He Sui is thrilled to see Wu Shi. He tells him that the city of Fuzhou has been liberated. He wants Wu Shi to help free Taiwan next. He officially welcomes him into a new spy ring called the "East Sea Intelligence Group."
Passing the Torch
The KMT leadership is already suspicious of Wu Shi. His new boss, Zhou Zhirou, casually asks if he has met with He Sui. Wu Shi lies and says no. Zhou then warns him to stay away. He Sui's son was spotted with communists. The walls are closing in.
The party orders He Sui to evacuate Taiwan immediately. Before he goes, he gives Wu Shi everything. He hands over all the contact info, secret codes, and a special token for the spy network. The emergency radio is with a ship's first mate named Zhang Hao. It is only to be used in a true crisis. If all else fails, Wu Shi must go to a specific pharmacy in Hong Kong and find a man named Wan Jingguang. He Sui also gives one last warning. A man named Gu Zhengwen is a traitor who got another cell captured. Wu Shi needs to watch his back.
The First Big Test
A Strategic Gambit
The military situation for the KMT is getting desperate. The PLA took Xiamen in just three days. Kinmen is the next target. In a high-level meeting, everyone is panicking. Wu Shi makes a brilliant strategic suggestion. He says they should move Hu Lian's army to defend Kinmen. The commanders are impressed. Then, an order arrives directly from Chiang Kai-shek with the exact same idea. Wu Shi looks like a military genius and a loyal officer.
The Hospital Showdown
Of course, Wu Shi's real job is to leak that plan. He fakes an illness to get out of a meeting with his boss. He sets up a risky rendezvous at a hospital with his contact, Zhang Hao. But the traitor, Gu Zhengwen, is there with his agents, waiting.
Wu Shi sees the trap but has to deliver the intel. Zhang Hao pretends to be a black marketeer selling penicillin. He gets the critical information about Hu Lian's army. Just as the agents move in, Zhang Hao grabs Wu Shi and pretends to take him hostage. He forces Wu Shi's aide, Nie Xi, to speed away in their car.
A chase breaks out. Gu Zhengwen's agents start shooting at the car. Nie Xi crashes. In the chaos, Wu Shi gets out of the car. He shoots one of the agents dead and wounds Gu Zhengwen himself.
A Close Call
Gu Zhengwen is now certain Wu Shi is a communist spy. The problem is he has no proof. Wu Shi's actions looked like he was defending himself from an attack. In a truly wild twist, Gu Zhengwen's own boss, Mao Renfeng, chews him out for the botched operation. Then Mao calls Wu Shi to personally apologize for the incident.
