Episode Summary
Gu Zhengwen uses Chen Zemin's children to break him, leading to a confession that exposes Cai Xiaoqian. A raid on Cai's safe house nearly succeeds, but Li Qing secretly helps Zhu Feng escape. The Interrogation That Breaks Everything
They Used His Kids
The episode kicks off during the Spring Festival. It’s a bittersweet scene. Wu Shi is walking through the celebrating crowds, but he’s just thinking about his family back home. He starts crying right there on the street. It’s a quiet, painful moment.
But the quiet doesn't last long. Gu Zhengwen is ready to break Chen Zemin. Weng Lianwang finds several children who look like they could be his. Gu brings them in for the interrogation. He also makes sure Li Qing is there to watch.
Li Qing brings the children to Chen Zemin one by one. And then it happens. His actual son and daughter are brought in. They see their father and just start sobbing. Chen Zemin completely loses it. He just screams curses at Gu Zhengwen.
The Betrayal
Gu Zhengwen has his leverage now. He threatens Chen Zemin's daughter. That's all it takes. Chen Zemin’s defenses completely crumble. You can see it just guts Li Qing to witness this. She looks sickened by the whole thing.
So, Chen Zemin talks. He gives up everything. He confesses his real identity and his mission. He also names the secretary of the Taiwan Work Committee, Cai Xiaoqian. At first, he refuses to say where Cai is hiding. But Gu just threatens his family again.
Chen Zemin breaks for good. He gives Gu two locations. One is the Jianchang Trading Post. The other is 26 Quanzhou Road. Gu immediately takes Li Qing and Weng Lianwang to hunt Cai down.
The Trap Springs Shut
A Narrow Escape
Zhu Feng is already at the Jianchang Trading Post. She's there to deliver intelligence to Cai Xiaoqian. She is just about to hand it over. Then the phone rings. It's a call from their comrades in the mountains. The message is chilling. Chen Zemin was never there for medical treatment.
Cai Xiaoqian instantly knows it’s a trap. But he has no time to react. Li Qing and Weng Lianwang burst in with agents from the Secrecy Bureau. Cai and Zhu Feng make a run for it. They jump over the back wall to escape. As they flee, Zhu Feng exposes her roll of film. The enemy won't get their hands on that intel.
A Friend on the Inside
Zhu Feng finds a hiding spot inside a large wardrobe. Li Qing is the first one to search the room. She finds Zhu Feng almost immediately. But then she does something huge. She pretends the wardrobe is empty.
Weng Lianwang comes in right after. He isn't satisfied. He wants to search the wardrobe again himself. Li Qing gets furious with him. She threatens to go report him to Gu Zhengwen. That gets him to back off.
Just then, a delivery person shows up for Cai. Gu detains him for questioning. Gu then sends Weng Lianwang to the second location, 26 Quanzhou Road. He orders Li Qing to stay behind at the trading post.
Loose Ends and New Suspicions
A Lie Unravels at Home
Zhu Feng manages to slip away from the trading post. The first thing she does is call Nie Xi. She tells him that Chen Zemin has been captured. Wu Shi hears the news. He correctly guesses that Li Qing was the one who let Zhu Feng go. He tells Nie Xi to get special travel passes made. They need to get Zhu Feng and Li Qing back to the mainland as soon as possible.
Zhu Feng rushes home. She has a wound on her arm and asks her maid, A-Ju, to help her with it. She lies about how she got it. She claims she scraped it during a mahjong game at the Dou residence. This was a bad lie. Her husband, Wang Changcheng, calls the Dou residence to confirm. He learns there was no game yesterday. Zhu Feng was never there. The suspicion is all over his face. He immediately calls the operator. He has their home phone line redirected to his office.
Greed Gets the Better of Him
Cai Xiaoqian actually makes it back to the mountains. But he can't relax. He’s worried about his sister-in-law. Against everyone's advice, he decides to go back down for her.
He tells her to pack her things. He then tries to see if 26 Quanzhou Road is safe. He has a food stall owner try to deliver a meal there. No one answers the door. Cai foolishly assumes this means the coast is clear. He goes to the house to retrieve his personal stash. He has a lot of gold and silver hidden there. Of course, it was a setup. Weng Lianwang and his men were waiting inside. They grab him on the spot.
A Desperate Plan
Nie Xi starts his new job in the Communications Section. His new position gives him the authority to approve special travel passes. He uses this power to create the documents for Zhu Feng and the others.
The episode closes with Gu Zhengwen looking over the items Cai went back for. It's a codebook. There are also stacks of silver notes and gold bars. Cai was caught because of his own greed. And now Gu has his codebook.
