The Walls Are Closing In
This episode kicks off with everyone in full-blown panic mode. Wang Changcheng gets home, and he's frantically looking for Zhu Feng. His wife, A-Ju, tells him Zhu Feng left right after the Spring Festival. She also mentions that Zhu Feng left them a pile of cash to start a business. This is a huge red flag for him.
Zhu Feng's Escape Plan
Zhu Feng knows she's in trouble. She goes straight to Wu Shi's house. She tells him her daughter's phone is bugged. She's also being followed. Wu Shi confirms her fears. He tells her that Cai Xiaoqian, their top guy, has been captured. The mission is blown.
He gives her a new objective. He hands over military intelligence about the defenses at Zhoushan. Then he tells her to get out of Taiwan immediately. She needs to be on a boat to Hong Kong by tomorrow. The clock is ticking.
A Tearful Goodbye
Just as Zhu Feng is about to leave, Wu Shi's wife, Wang Bikui, gets home. Wu Shi doesn't want his wife to see them together. It would raise too many questions. He tells Zhu Feng to sneak out the back.
But Zhu Feng can't do it. She knows this might be the last time she ever sees her friend. She circles around to the front door to say a proper goodbye. Wang Bikui is heartbroken to hear she's leaving for Hong Kong. Zhu Feng explains her boat ticket is for the next day. As a parting gift, Wang Bikui gives her a shawl she was knitting. They both know this is more than a simple "see you later." It's a final farewell.
The next morning, Zhu Feng packs her bags. She lies to A-Ju, saying she's just taking a quick trip to buy some jade. Before she leaves, she tells A-Ju to air out the bedding. Wang Changcheng is waiting for her outside. He looks her dead in the eye and tells her not to come back. He's worried she will bring disaster down on A-Ju. At that moment, Zhu Feng knows. He figured out who she really is.
A Botched Capture and a Daring Escape
Things are just as messy on the other side. Nie Xi gets benched by Wu Shi. After what happened to Xiao Qian, Wu Shi doesn't want him taking any more risks. He's officially off the Zhu Feng case. Nie Xi still helps her one last time. He gives her a special pass and drives her to the airport. She boards a military plane headed for Zhoushan. Wu Shi rushes to the airport to see her off with a gift, but he's too late. The plane is already in the air.
Cai Xiaoqian Slips Through Their Fingers
The intelligence agents think they have a win. The captured Cai Xiaoqian agrees to lead them to another communist contact. He takes Gu Zhengwen and Weng Lianwang to the main telecommunications building. He cleverly tells Gu Zhengwen, the guy in charge, to wait in the car.
Cai Xiaoqian takes Weng Lianwang inside. The place is packed with people. In the chaos, Cai Xiaoqian makes a run for it and escapes through a window. Just like that, he's gone. Their star witness just vanished into thin air.
Gu Zhengwen's Last Chance
Their boss, Mao Renfeng, is furious. He gives Gu Zhengwen two major demerits for the failure. His career is on the line. But Gu Zhengwen isn't ready to give up. He argues that Cai Xiaoqian has no real support system in Taiwan. He'll have to reach out to other communists for help. Gu Zhengwen promises he can track him down. Mao Renfeng agrees to give him one last shot to fix his mistake. While this is happening, Cai Xiaoqian grabs a few things from his home and disappears with his sister-in-law.
The Trail Leads Home
Zhu Feng makes it to Zhoushan. She finds the director of a local hospital, Gu Sunmou, and asks for help getting to the mainland. He tells her it's too risky right now and offers her a place to stay for a few days. She's safe, but she's also trapped.
A Phone Number Changes Everything
Back in Taiwan, Gu Zhengwen is desperately searching for a lead. He goes through Cai Xiaoqian's notebook and finds a torn page with a phone number traced on it. The number is 2872. He goes to Wang Changcheng, who works at the phone company, to trace it.
This is where it all falls apart. Wang Changcheng recognizes the number instantly. It's his own home phone. He lies, telling Gu Zhengwen the number isn't in the system. Gu Zhengwen doesn't buy it for a second. He picks up the phone in Wang Changcheng's office and dials 2872. A-Ju answers. Wang Changcheng is caught. He has no choice but to admit the number belongs to him.
Wang Changcheng's World Crumbles
Gu Zhengwen goes with Wang Changcheng to his house. Wang tries his best to cover things up, but A-Ju innocently mentions that their friend Zhu Feng was staying with them. Gu Zhengwen starts asking questions. A-Ju says Zhu Feng was visiting from Hong Kong.
That's the final piece of the puzzle for Gu Zhengwen. He reveals why he's there. He suspects Zhu Feng is a communist agent from Hong Kong. He also believes she is connected to "Lao Zheng," the code name for the man they just lost. The man who had their home phone number.
The baby starts crying, and A-Ju goes to check on them. While tending to the bedding, she discovers the huge stack of money Zhu Feng left behind. She realizes this was no friendly visit.
Wang Changcheng pulls Gu Zhengwen outside. He swears he had no idea Zhu Feng was a communist. He doesn't know any Cai Xiaoqian. But Gu Zhengwen applies the pressure. He warns Wang Changcheng that if he doesn't tell the truth, the Secrecy Bureau will destroy his entire family. Cornered and terrified, Wang Changcheng breaks. He tells Gu Zhengwen everything he knows about Zhu Feng.
