Recap and Spoilers: Blood River, Episode 14
You know, I thought I had Su Changhe figured out. I was wrong. This episode peeled back some serious layers on the Dark River assassins. And it gave us one of the best flashbacks of the season.
A Very Specific Threat
The episode kicks off with Su Changhe holding a knife to Crow's throat. It’s a classic assassin power move. But then the conversation gets weird. Su Changhe isn't just threatening him. He's giving him care instructions for Su Muyu. He tells Crow that his friend needs to be taken care of properly. He even specifies that Su Muyu doesn't like spicy food. He wants him to have good food and a good place to stay.
After Crow leaves, Su Changhe lets out a sigh of relief. He admits he had to fight a powerful urge to just kill them all. He genuinely hopes they treat Muyu well. It’s a strange mix of cold-blooded killer and overprotective best friend.
A Prince and an Assassin
We find the Prince of Langya, Xiao Ruofeng, drinking alone. He’s thinking about a man named Mr. Li. He worries Mr. Li would disapprove of the strange methods he's been using.
Su Changhe finds him there. He immediately figures out what the Prince is up to. Xiao Ruofeng has been avoiding his duties at court. He wants to see if the government can even function without him. The Prince admits that if Su Changhe wasn't the Patriarch of Dark River, he would have liked to share a drink with him. That's about as close to a compliment as you can get between these two.
Naturally, they start fighting.
The Failed Assassination
The fight is intense. Then Li Xinyue shows up and joins the fray. She says Li Hanyi told her to attack Su Changhe on sight. No questions asked. Just go for it.
Su Changhe is outnumbered and outmatched. He knows he's probably going to die there. But just as he's about to fall, Su Zhe arrives and saves him.
Later, Bai Hehuai finds a badly injured Su Changhe. He can't believe how beaten up he is. Su Changhe just finds it funny that Bai Hehuai is mocking him in this state. Crow also shows up, confused. He says they sent a signal for backup, but his team never got it.
This is when Bai Hehuai finally understands Su Changhe's real plan. The assassination attempt wasn't about killing the Prince. It was a calculated move. By making such a bold attack, Su Changhe forced everyone's hand. He drew all the players onto the board. Now that everyone is out in the open, it's much harder for any hidden traitors to make a move. Su Changhe just smirks when Bai Hehuai calls him a bad rogue. He got exactly what he wanted.
A Ghost from the Past
We get a strange, dream-like scene with Su Muyu. He's in a prison cell, talking to a person in shadows. He says he's searching for an answer. The stranger asks him why he never had any suspicions. Then, the person pulls down their veil. It's his father.
Su Muyu just manages to call out "Dad" before his father collapses. The entire scene dissolves like smoke. This was definitely not real. It was a vision or a memory haunting him.
The Best New Year's Eve Dinner
The episode ends with a flashback. We see a young Su Changhe and Su Muyu. They were just low-level grunts back then, constantly running missions.
It's New Year's Eve. Su Changhe sees a family's dinner and wants to steal it. Su Muyu stops him. He points out that normal people struggle all year. The New Year's feast is the only good meal they get.
As they're about to leave, an old woman invites them in to eat with her. They sit down for the meal. They soon realize her own family is dead. She is still giving them the best food she has. Su Changhe later says it was the best New Year's dinner they ever had.
When they leave, they quietly leave some money behind. Su Changhe teases Su Muyu for only leaving five copper coins, calling him a poor guy. Outside, they watch the fireworks. They are both smiling, genuinely happy for a moment. You can see the longing on their faces for a simple, normal life. Su Changhe looks at the sky, then turns to his friend. "Happy New Year's Eve," he says.
