A Future Not Worth Living

Meet Xun Weilai, A Man Down on His Luck

We start in the year 2033. Our main guy is Xun Weilai. His life is not going well. He’s visiting the grave of his best friend, Chen Ming. That tells you everything you need to know about his current mood.

He runs into his other old friend, Luo Aiwen, or Lao Luo now. Lao Luo looks successful. He’s got the nice clothes and the busy attitude. But it’s all a front. His wife calls to say she’s divorcing him. He lies to Xun Weilai and says it’s a client begging for his business. The truth is, Lao Luo is an editor for a newspaper, and nobody reads newspapers anymore. He’s about to lose his job.

Xun Weilai is also broke. He’s so stuck in the past that he can’t adapt to the modern world. He asks Lao Luo for money. Instead of cash, Lao Luo gives him an idea. He suggests a place called the "Life Company." Apparently, this company can send you back in time. It gives you a shot at changing your destiny. Xun Weilai isn't sure, but then his own wife calls. That call seems to be the final push he needs. He’s going back.

Back to High School

The New Transfer Student

The show zips back to Xun Weilai's high school days. Back then, he went by a different name. He was Zhao Zuoyou. We see him as a teenager, eager to get out of school with his friends Luo Aiwen and Chen Ming.

Suddenly, adult Xun Weilai shows up outside the school. He runs right into his younger self, Zhao Zuoyou. They’re skipping class and get caught by their teacher, Ms. Dai Juan. This is where it gets good. Adult Xun Weilai does what he always wished he’d done. He yells at the teacher right in front of everyone. He asks why she’s patrolling the halls instead of proctoring an exam. The students are shocked.

But then we cut to the teacher's office. Xun Weilai completely changes his tune. He lays the praise on thick. He tells Ms. Dai he’ll write a thousand-word apology. He plays the part of a well-meaning transfer student perfectly. She totally buys it.

First Day Jitters and Canned Peaches

Xun Weilai joins his old class. He sees his friend Chen Ming, who is just grinding away, solving practice problems. Xun Weilai tells him to take a break, but Chen Ming is in the zone and doesn't listen.

It's the first day for our "transfer student," and there's a mock exam. His younger self, Zhao Zuoyou, doesn't care. He ditches the test to go find a girl, Wang Yiman. Adult Xun Weilai follows him. They find Wang Yiman passed out in the bathroom.

Zhao Zuoyou assumes she has low blood sugar from a diet. He runs out and gets her some cold noodles. She’s not impressed. Xun Weilai, however, knows better. He brings her a can of peaches. She eats them right up. He clearly remembers what she actually liked.

The Mission Begins

The Big Choice

Now we get to the real reason Xun Weilai came back. It’s time for the students to choose their academic track. They can pick either liberal arts or science. This is the major life decision he wants to change.

He pulls his younger self aside. He tells Zhao Zuoyou to choose liberal arts. Then he goes to work on their friends. He easily convinces both Chen Ming and Luo Aiwen to pick liberal arts too. This puts young Zhao Zuoyou in a tough spot. He always wanted to pick science, but now his two best friends are going the other way.

Later, the cafeteria's card reader breaks down. The line for food gets huge. Xun Weilai, with his adult knowledge, steps in and fixes the programming. All the students think he's some kind of genius.

A Clash of Ideals

Young Zhao Zuoyou notices that Xun Weilai has a stomach problem and seems concerned. But the adult version is cold. He tells his younger self that friendship is worthless. He says money is the only thing that matters in the future. He insists that choosing the science track will lead to a bad life.

This makes Zhao Zuoyou furious. He’s young and idealistic. He can’t believe this new guy is so cynical. He throws the stomach medicine at Xun Weilai and storms off.

At home, things are also tense. Zhao Zuoyou’s dad, Zhao Donglai, is getting chewed out by his wife. And on his birthday, Zhao Zuoyou gets a cake. He thinks it’s from his dad, but it's not. He finds gifts from his friends and realizes the cake must be from Xun Weilai. When he tells his dad about the new student's advice to pick liberal arts, his dad shuts it down immediately. He tells his son he must choose science.

The episode ends with Xun Weilai alone at night. He’s holding his ID card from 2033. He remembers the rule from the Life Company. You can’t change major life decisions. If you do, they’ll pull you back to the future. But he doesn't care. He came back to fix his life, and that's exactly what he plans to do.
