Back to the Origin Episode 10 Recap

Family drama takes center stage this time around. We see the ugly side of relatives when money gets tight, and the awkwardness of hiding big secrets from the people who raised you. Both Ge Kaiyang and Lu Xinying face some harsh realities about their current situations.

Kaiyang’s Family Reunion Goes South

Ge Kaiyang decides to visit his uncle and aunt. He isn't there to catch up. He has a specific mission. He needs help for his parents. His relatives, however, have other plans. They keep the conversation strictly on surface-level family gossip. They refuse to bring up Kaiyang's parents.

Dinner is excruciating. Kaiyang stays silent. His relatives are forced to fake some concern and ask about his home life. Kaiyang prepares to ask for financial help. They shut him down before he even gets the words out.

This is a tough watch. Kaiyang’s parents helped these people in the past. Now, the uncle and aunt refuse to acknowledge that debt. They want nothing to do with the mess. They actively distance themselves. Kaiyang finally sees them for who they are. He gives up on expecting any support from them. He doesn't want to be around such hypocrisy.

He leaves. There is one small bright spot, though. His younger aunt chases after him. She secretly slips him a red envelope with money. It’s a small gesture, but it proves not everyone is heartless.

Back at home, things aren't much better. Kaiyang finds his grandma drinking porridge. She has diabetes. He tries to tell her to watch her health. She ignores him completely.

Xinying Gets Her Money Back

Lu Xinying is done waiting around. She camps out in front of the law firm waiting for Lawyer Kuang. He finally shows up. He tries to dodge her immediately. Xinying isn't having it. She goes full drama queen. She literally hugs his leg and screams.

The scene is chaotic enough to drag the police into it. It works, though. Xinying gets her insurance premiums refunded.

She still has a major problem. She is technically breaking the law. She wants Kuang to clear her name so she can return to Canada. He can't help her there. He just returns the money. Before they part ways, Xinying asks about Kaiyang. She wants to know if they are running a scam together. Kuang insists he doesn't even know Kaiyang.

Later, Xinying hangs out with her best friend, Li Manfei. She shows her a photo of Kaiyang. Her mom video calls right in the middle of this. Xinying has to pretend she is still in Canada. Her mom makes it worse. She wants Xinying to walk a rich lady’s dog to make connections. Xinying just has to nod along.

The Most Awkward Cab Ride Ever

Xinying is stuck in China and broke. She needs a job to cover her daily expenses. She finishes an interview and it starts pouring rain. She books a specialized ride-share car to get back to her hotel.

Fate plays a cruel joke here. Her dad is the driver.

He is focused on the road and doesn't look at the backseat. Xinying panics. She tries to make herself invisible. It triggers a memory from 2003. Her dad used to play hide-and-seek with her. Now she is hiding for real.

She bolts from the car as soon as they arrive. She calls her dad immediately, overwhelmed with guilt. She starts crying on the phone while he comforts her, thinking she is thousands of miles away.

The cover is blown quickly. She left her resume in his car. Her dad realizes she is back in the country. He calls her. She confesses and gives him her address.

He comes over. He is furious, but he holds it in. The neighbors are being loud, so he screams at them instead to vent his anger. They finally sit down. Xinying lies again. She doesn't mention the legal trouble. She just says she hates the environment in Canada and won't go back. Seeing her dad driving a ride-share for money breaks her heart.

Kaiyang Steps Up

Kaiyang spends his days moping at home. His grandma gets sick of it. She uses every trick in the book to goad him into leaving the house.

It works. Kaiyang realizes he has been useless without his father's money. He needs to find his own worth. He stops feeling sorry for himself. He goes out and gets a job delivering food.
