Weddings and War Zones
Time jumps forward to 1943. Ke Lin manages to cure Ma Wanqi’s tuberculosis. Ma celebrates by marrying Luo Baixin. They keep it simple. They take the fifty thousand silver dollars they saved on the ceremony and donate every cent to an orphanage.
Fast forward another eighteen months. The Soviets are pushing back, but the Japanese are getting desperate. Commander Tanaka calls a meeting with Sawa Eisaku and Matsui Shinji. They pinpoint the problem. The Wuguishan guerrillas are protecting the supply line from Zhongshan to Macau. The Japanese decide to wipe them out.
By the summer of 1944, the situation is grim. The Japanese army surrounds the resistance base. The guerrillas take heavy losses. Dozens are wounded and need surgery fast. Ke Lin gets the news at the Dahao Gang. He mobilizes the entire hospital staff. They sign a petition asking the Macau Governor for special permission to operate.
The Addict and the Spy
Shuiguizai is a liability. He breaks into the Dahao Gang storeroom to steal penicillin. He hears footsteps and panics. He puts the drugs back just as Liang Zhong walks in. Liang Zhong doesn't realize what happened. He actually gives the kid money and tells him to kick his opium habit.
Kindness doesn't work here. Shuiguizai turns right around and steals two boxes of penicillin anyway. He tries to swap them for opium at a den. Huang Gongjie catches him red-handed.
Diesel Diplomacy
Sawa Eisaku is still hungry for the tungsten ore controlled by the Dahao Gang. Fukue demands the Macau government start joint inspections. They pause all shipping.
This enrages the British Consul, Reeves. He has a massive shipment of diesel sitting there meant for the Allies. He screams at Governor Dai Sile for being a pushover. Dai Sile caves and promises to get the fuel moving.
Luobo and Rodrigues go to He Xian. They want to smuggle the diesel on the Xi'an ship disguised as civilian goods. He Xian thinks it is a trap. He asks about the hospital permits. The officials stall. They claim approval is coming.
The Governor's Betrayal
He Xian makes a power move. He offers to be the sole guarantor for the ship. He will take all the risk. If the Japanese find out, he goes down alone, not the government.
Official Guanye runs this by the Governor. He suggests they take the diesel deal but reject the hospital permits. He thinks saving anti-Japanese fighters is too risky. The Governor agrees. The hospital’s petition gets rejected. The doctors resign in mass protest.
He Xian storms the Governor’s palace. He sees the betrayal clearly now. He refuses to sign the guarantee papers. He tells them if the government won't save lives, the Chinese merchants are done cooperating. Luobo is furious, but Rodrigues steps in. He signs the papers himself to get the fuel moving.
Blood on the Docks
Shuiguizai makes his move at the docks. He fakes an injury so Liang Zhong lets him rest. He Xian and Ma Wanqi want to cut ties with the government completely. Ke Lin talks them down. He insists they have to endure for the greater good.
That night, patience runs out. Shuiguizai leads Japanese agents straight to the Dahao Gang dock. He attacks Liang Zhong from behind. Huang Gongjie brings his men in. They slaughter the guards on the pier.
