Chaos in the Memorial Room
Takahashi Akihiko finally figured out Arakawa’s secret. He cornered him in the memorial room and demanded answers. That was a mistake. Arakawa panicked. He grabbed a heavy incense burner and smashed it right over Takahashi's head. Arakawa didn't stick around to check for a pulse. He ran for his life.
Things were just as messy over at Prison 7. A Japanese guard woke up from being knocked out. He saw empty cells. The prisoners had bolted. He tried to stop the escape alone. The escaping prisoners beat him half to death. Arakawa ran right into this mob. He almost caught a bullet in the confusion. Takahashi eventually woke up. He didn't chase anyone. He hid like a coward.
The Grain Depot Ambush
The alarm blared across the facility. Takahashi saw backup arriving. He got his confidence back. He stood up and ordered his men to fire. He immediately got shot and went down.
Outside the wire, Tong Changfu and Changgen made it to the area near the Chenggaozi train station. They got pinned down near the Kwantung Army grain depot. Soldiers had them trapped. They dove under a slope just as the resistance fighters blew the depot sky-high. A massive gunfight broke out. Tong watched a comrade die right in front of him. The image brought back memories of Er Tiao and his great-grandmother.
Tong stopped shaking. He picked up a bow and arrow. He dropped two Japanese soldiers with perfect shots. The machine gun fire stopped. The resistance fighters charged forward.
A Trap and a Massacre
Yulan showed up to guide the group toward the railway. They reached the platform and saw Kojima signaling to them. Tong realized something was wrong. He yelled for everyone to run. It was a setup. Soldiers popped out from behind cover. They killed one of the escapees instantly.
Back inside Unit 731, the prisoners in Building 8 took control. They grabbed Takahashi and used him as a human shield. They took out all their rage on him. Even Arakawa lost it. He started screaming in Chinese. He called the soldiers devils. He called the place hell. He said the Emperor was the biggest devil of them all.
Ishii Shiro arrived. He didn't care about hostages. He gave the order to use "tea." The soldiers put on gas masks. They forced the prisoners back into Building 8. Then they pumped in poison gas. Inside the building, someone started singing. The rest joined in. The song continued until the gas did its work. Men, women, and children all died. Arakawa watched it happen. He looked broken.
Blood on the Snow
Yulan made it back to the grain depot. It was a graveyard. San Min was dead. Xiao Liu was barely holding on. Yulan tried to save him. Xiao Liu shouted for her to stay back. He tackled a Japanese soldier to buy her time. The soldier shot him dead.
Yulan escaped. She told Yan Bingrui the truth. The soldiers at the station were from the Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department. Kojima Yukio was a liar.
Tong Changfu and Changgen kept running. They were exhausted. They didn't find the Songhua River. They found a dead end. Then a rider on a horse appeared. He raised his gun. He saw they were Chinese. He lowered the weapon.
The revolt inside Unit 731 ended in silence. The snow turned red. Soldiers dragged the bodies out of Building 8 like they were hauling trash. But the spirit remained. A dying prisoner used his own blood to write two lines on the wall. He refused to give in.
