Episode Summary
Yan Bingrui dies after a brutal fight on the ice with Koja Yukio. Tong Changfu secures exit papers but gives his travel money to a grieving widow. Yulan braves the sewers to infiltrate the hospital, retrieving a list of Unit 731's crimes and discovering Tong Changgen's body. Tong decides to sacrifice his escape to poison the soldiers at Unit 731, urging Yulan to take the evidence and their family to safety.

The Frozen River Showdown
Things get ugly fast between Yan Bingrui and Koja Yukio. Yan is convinced Koja is a traitor. He wants blood. Tong Changfu tries to hold him back, but Yan manages to slice Koja’s face. That sets off a chase. Koja runs out onto the frozen Songhua River. Yan is right on his heels.
They brawl on the ice. It is brutal. Yan pins Koja down with a shovel. He demands to know why Koja turned. Koja fights back and gets cut near his eye. These two used to be partners. Now they are trying to kill each other because of their nationalities.
Yan actually hesitates. He decides not to kill Koja. That mercy costs him everything. Koja doesn't hesitate. He grabs a camera given to him by Ishii Shiro and smashes Yan’s skull. The ice cracks under the violence. Both men fall into the freezing water. Yan is gone.
Money Troubles and Good Deeds
Tong Changfu has to break the bad news to Yulan. Yan is dead. But Tong still has work to do. He risks his neck delivering life-saving grain from Qian Ye to the resistance fighters. He secures the exit papers they need to flee.
He goes to buy tickets, but he is short on cash. He tries to get paid by Fujii, but that is a dead end. Then he sees something heartbreaking. Lu Zengyou is dead, and his wife and child are begging Fujii for compensation. Tong can’t walk away. He gives the widow all his remaining money. He lies and says it is the settlement money from Lu’s boss. He is broke, but his conscience is clear.
Into the Sewers
Yulan knows she is on her own now. She needs that list of names before she flees. She hides her plan from her brother and sister-in-law. She waits for nightfall. Her route is nasty. She climbs into the Russian winery and heads for the sewers.
The place is crawling with rats. Yulan is terrified. She almost turns back. Then she remembers Yan Bingrui. She pushes through the fear. She navigates the sewer system to reach the Chinese Eastern Railway Hospital. She dodges Japanese guards and finds Room 9.
She starts digging for the special directory. Guards walk in. She dives under a table just in time. She grabs the list and gets out. It is a close call.
The Grim Discovery
Yulan makes it back, limping and shaken. Tong doesn't ask questions. He is just proud of her grit. But Yulan breaks down. She tells him what else she saw in Room 9. She saw Tong Changgen. He was beaten beyond recognition. He died with his eyes open.
She hands the list to her brother. Tong asks what it is. Yulan explains it is the proof of Unit 731’s crimes. The resistance is shattered, so she doesn't know who to trust with it. Tong tells her the hard truth. She is the resistance now. She has to take that list, leave Harbin, and get out of Manchuria. The world needs to know what these monsters did.
The Last Delivery
Tong Changfu visits Unit 731 to deliver apples. He sees his friends Shi Nianzi and Old Yanguo have been captured. He knows the unit plans to celebrate the New Year. They will all be eating apples.
Tong makes a heavy choice. He is going to make one last delivery. He prepares a batch of poisoned apples. He tells Yulan to get Grandma and Guifen on the train no matter what. He might not make it. He refuses to leave like a coward. Downstairs, Guifen sees the poison. She knows exactly what Tong is about to do.
