Episode Summary

A bullied soldier accidentally releases plague rats. Villagers dig up infected horse meat and eat it, leading to a swift outbreak. Zhang Qingfa dies screaming. Kojima decides to document the atrocities on film. Soldiers raid the village, killing Tong Qishun and capturing the infected Yulan.

A Shattered Jar and a Deadly Feast

Things are falling apart at the camp. The Tanaka squad is incompetent. They lost two rats. The horses are dying in droves. Instructor Matsumoto wants the mess cleaned up immediately. He orders the Youth Squad to haul away dismembered horse remains. They also have to dump the dead rats. These aren't pets. They carry the plague. The glass jar containing them is a ticking time bomb. Narita Kazuo gets stuck holding it.

Narino Akira decides this is the perfect time to be a bully. He picks a fight with Narita. He smashes the jar right on Narita's head. The glass shatters. Dead rats hit the ground. Everyone knows what that means. The squad scatters in panic.

The Cursed Meat

Tong Changfu watches the chaos from the bushes. He sees the soldiers bury the horses at Hejiagou. He thinks he is clever. He digs them up and moves them to the Russian cemetery to hide his stash. But he isn't the only scavenger. Zhang Qingfa and his crew dig them up again. They don't see disease. They see dinner.

Zhang Qingfa, Maozi, and Tong Qishun roast the meat. They feast on it. The consequences are immediate. They catch the plague. Guifen finds out the truth from Yulan. She screams at Tong Changfu. He is an idiot for trusting anything the Japanese bury. They deny everything when Zhang's wife comes knocking. Yulan tells them to burn the leftovers. They watch the fire. Yulan looks at her arm. She sees blisters. It is too late.

Death and Delusions

Zhang Qingfa dies. It is a messy end. He screams Tong Changfu's name with his last breath. His wife wails outside Tong's house in the dark. The Japanese bring in fresh victims. One woman holds a baby. The translator begs for mercy. The soldiers ignore him.

Back at the canteen, Narita Kazuo is losing his mind. He feels rats everywhere. His officer slaps him. Then real rats flood out of the kitchen. It is a nightmare scenario.

The Camera Doesn't Lie

Yan Bingrui talks some sense into Kojima Yukio. He mentions Chiyoko's wish for a kind husband. Kojima finally grows a spine. He decides to film everything. He wants the ugly truth on tape. Iwasaki brings a doctor to see Maiko. One look at her face sends the doctor running. She looks monstrous. Her neck has a massive tumor. Her husband forces Arakawa to spill her location. She is at Tianli Village.

No Escape

Ogasawara plays shaman at the village. He tries to exorcise the "evil spirit" from Maiko. Kojima says she needs a hospital. Chiyoko begs for help. Ogasawara whips her for speaking up.

The soldiers descend on the locals. They order a gathering at the water tower. Tong Qishun is too sick to move. He refuses to go. He tries to run. They shoot him dead. Guifen and Tong Changfu try to hide Yulan. The soldiers count heads. The numbers don't add up. They search the house. They find Yulan. They drag her away.
