The Ghost of Promises Past

We start with a trip down memory lane. A young Jin Chao gives Jiang Mu a fountain pen. He tells her to practice her handwriting. He promises to come back and see her. Jiang Mu took that to heart. She wrote him piles of letters. He never wrote back once. Not a single word. She eventually gave up. She told herself she wouldn't miss him. That is clearly a lie.

Debts and Bad Dates

Back in the present, Jin Chao drops Jiang Mu off and heads out. He meets up with Jin Fengzi and the guys for drinks. Wan Qing interrupts the fun with a phone call. Jin Chao heads over to deal with a situation involving Jin Qiang. It looks like debt trouble.

Wan Qing dressed up for this meeting. She wants Jin Chao's attention. He ignores her completely. He just wants to grab Jin Qiang and leave. Wan Qing gets annoyed. She offers a deal. If Jin Chao stays for dinner, she wipes Jin Qiang's gambling debt. Jin Chao is about to grab a pool cue and start a fight. Then his phone buzzes. It's a text from Jiang Mu asking if he's asleep. He looks at the screen and walks right out. Wan Qing is left fuming.

Plumbing Problems

Jiang Mu wants Jin Chao at home. She decides to force the issue. She breaks the water heater pipe on purpose. Xin Xin catches her in the act but keeps her mouth shut. The plan works perfectly. Jin Chao comes back to fix the leak.

He works on the pipe with a wrench. He gets sweaty. His arms are wet. His abs show a little bit. Jiang Mu stares. She forgets to be subtle. Jin Chao catches her looking. She panics and says she is looking at the sun. It is a terrible excuse.

Into the Ring

The heater is dead. Jin Chao says he will order a new one. He tells her a guy named San Lai will install it. He has to leave again. Jiang Mu isn't having it. She follows him to the train station. Jin Chao spots her immediately. He gives her cash. He tells her to go shopping and stop following him.

She doesn't listen. She tries to negotiate a ride with a rickshaw driver. Jin Fengzi spots her. He assumes Jin Chao gave her permission to watch the big event. He takes her straight to an underground boxing match.

The Fix Is In

Jin Chao is fighting under the nickname "You Jiu." His opponent is He Zhang from Wan Ji. The big bosses, Lin Sui and Wan Shengbang, have money on this. Wan Qing warns the opponent not to actually hurt Jin Chao.

But there is a script. Jin Chao has to lose this fight to keep the peace with the Wan family. He has to take a beating. Jin Fengzi brings Jiang Mu into the venue. She sees Jin Chao getting pummeled. She freezes. Jin Fengzi pulls her aside. The fight is brutal. Jiang Mu cries. She grabs Jin Fengzi and offers to pay whatever money she has. She just wants to take Jin Chao home.

The Escape

Jin Chao hits the mat. The referee starts the count. Jiang Mu screams his name. He hears her. He drags himself up at the last second. He Zhang lands a flying kick. Jin Chao crashes into the ropes. Jiang Mu runs right up to the ring. She calls him "Brother."

They lock eyes. That is all it takes. Jin Chao snaps out of it. He stops throwing the fight. He destroys He Zhang completely. He doesn't even wait for the match to finish. He jumps out of the ring, grabs Jiang Mu, and runs. Wan Shengbang is furious. He orders He Zhang to go after them.

Cornered

Jiang Mu is a mess. She cries and demands answers. She asks why he changed. She asks why he never wrote back. She is terrified his hands are damaged. She worries he won't be able to use the pen she bought.

They don't have time for this conversation. A car chases them down. Jin Chao drives like a maniac to shake them. It isn't enough. They get blocked into a dead-end alley.
