The Hard Sell

Zhang Zhaoyuan is a long way from home. He traveled all the way from Shenzhen to Tibet with one goal. He needs to sell yak insurance. It isn't going well. He tries every trick in the book. The herders just aren't interested. They refuse to sign up.

Zhang decides to focus on a specific yak. It’s a small one named Niu Niu. He wants to tag its ear. This helps with management and health tracking. Grandma Zhuoma shuts him down immediately. She hates the idea. Zhang doesn't give up. He pulls out his phone. He shows her a picture of his daughter. Her name is Niuniu too. He promises to protect the yak just like his own kid. This finally works. Grandma Zhuoma sees his sincerity. She agrees to let him tag the animal.

Shake Up

The vibe shifts that night. The herders gather around a bonfire to dance. Zhang sits off to the side. He is busy crunching data. Grandma Zhuoma brings him a warm fur robe. She invites him to join the party. He puts on the robe and feels accepted. He video calls his wife back in Shenzhen. They talk about how much they miss each other.

Then the ground starts to shake. A massive earthquake hits the region. The yaks panic. They scatter in every direction. Zhang drops the call without hanging up. He runs to help the herders. They spend the entire night chasing down the frightened animals. By morning, six yaks are still missing. Zhang doesn't wait around. He files the insurance claims for the herders right away.

Man vs. Wild

Grandma Zhuoma is frantic. She can't find little Niu Niu anywhere. She asks Zhang for help. He steps up immediately. He joins the search party. They manage to recover four of the missing yaks. But Niu Niu is still gone.

Zhang tracks the yak's grazing path. He finds a pile of dung on the ground. He calls Old Mou for advice. Old Mou tells him to touch it. Zhang grimaces but does it. The dung is still warm. He is close. He tries to jump on his motorcycle. The tank is dry. He has to walk. He hikes until the sun goes down. He finally spots Niu Niu. The poor thing is lying on the ground. Its leg is injured. Zhang calls Hazha. Hazha jumps in his truck to come get them. Grandma Zhuoma makes sure he brings food for Zhang.

Wolf Dreams

Darkness falls completely. The stars come out. Zhang builds a small fire. He realizes he missed his scheduled video call with his daughter. He feels guilty about it. The yak seems to understand. It looks at him with sad eyes.

The weather turns on them. Heavy rain puts out the fire. Hazha’s truck gets stuck in the mud miles away. Hazha launches a drone to find Zhang’s location. Zhang drifts off to sleep holding the yak. He has a nightmare. A pack of wolves surrounds them. He fights them off with a torch in his dream. He vows to protect Niu Niu with his life. He wakes up to a sound. It isn't wolves. It is Hazha calling his name. The drone hovers overhead. Zhang waves. He is safe.

He looks thinner and his skin is dark from the sun. She worries about him. Zhang just smiles. He turns the camera around. He shows his daughter the herders. They are happy and their lives are secure.
