Episode 20 Recap: The Calm Before the Storm
The episode opens with a few moments of fragile peace. The innocent Lin Tao, ignoring her mother's warnings, visits the recuperating Bai Jiusi, bringing him fresh peaches from her home. She naively believes that being near a "god" is the safest place in the world, and her unwavering devotion only deepens Bai Jiusi's concern for her safety.
That evening, a quiet, pivotal conversation takes place between Bai Jiusi and Li Qingyue. As she sews a hat for Lin Tao, he approaches her, expressing his sorrow for the hardships she must have endured during her ten-year seal, noting how the once-great immortal has become skilled in domestic chores. He reflects that if gods were to truly empathize with human suffering, they would be trapped in eternal grief. He gently asks her to tell him the true source of her hatred for him. Visibly moved, Li Qingyue relents, promising to tell him everything once the evil spirits have been vanquished. For a brief moment, the two seem to reach a new understanding.
All Hell Breaks Loose
This fragile peace is shattered as three separate crises erupt at once, boxing our heroes in from all sides.
- Siege at the Jingyun Sect: The formidable Long Yuan and his followers storm the gates of the Jingyun Sect, demanding they hand over Bai Jiusi. The sect's defender, Meng Chu, is outmatched but refuses to stand down. Just as bloodshed seems imminent, the senior member Li Mo arrives to mediate the tense standoff.
- A Daughter's Desperate Search: Elsewhere, Fan Ling'er, desperate to find her father, walks straight into a trap and falls under the control of the very man she was seeking.
- An Assault on the Homestead: Back at their residence, the opportunistic cultivator Xiaoyaozi leads a mob to capture Bai Jiusi, proclaiming him to be the source of the demonic presence. To save the still-weakened Bai Jiusi, Li Qingyue unleashes her power, temporarily trapping the attackers and allowing her, Bai Jiusi, and their companion Dahuang to make a desperate escape.
A Sacrifice to Save a Soul
On the run, Li Qingyue tells Bai Jiusi she is leaving to find a safe place for him to heal, but it's a lie. In reality, she plans to confront the powerful demon alone. Knowing she cannot win in her mortal form, she intends to use a forbidden technique that will destroy both the demon and herself.
However, Bai Jiusi sees through her ruse and follows her, arriving just moments too late. He finds Li Qingyue on the brink of death, her body failing from the magical backlash of her attack. To save her primordial spirit from dissipating forever, Bai Jiusi makes a devastating choice: he transfers his own protective Spirit Pearl—the very essence of his power—into her body. The act saves her but leaves him critically weakened and his own spirit on the verge of collapse. As Li Qingyue loses consciousness, she murmurs in despair, "I just wanted to get you away safely after the demon was gone..."
A Plot Comes to Fruition
Pushing through his agony, Bai Jiusi uses the last of his strength to finally destroy the demon. But as he stands victorious, he collapses from his injuries and is immediately captured by Xiaoyaozi and his men.
Xiaoyaozi seizes the opportunity to enact his plan. He presents the captured Bai Jiusi to the public, accusing him of being the true monster and demanding his execution. As the crowd's anger builds, a hysterical Lin Tao rushes through to the execution platform, crying out, "The god is not an evil spirit!"
At that exact moment, Xiaoyaozi summons a bolt of heavenly lightning to strike Bai Jiusi down. In a horrific twist of fate, Lin Tao moves to shield him and takes the full force of the blast, dying instantly before the horrified eyes of the townspeople.
The crowd erupts. To them, it appears as if Bai Jiusi has just murdered his most loyal defender. As the mob surges forward, filled with rage and grief, Bai Jiusi stares at Lin Tao's lifeless body, a terrible realization dawning on him. He whispers, almost to himself, "This scheme... was it yours?"
Spoilers & Lingering Questions
The episode ends on a series of massive cliffhangers, setting the stage for a dark and turbulent future.
- Bai Jiusi, Public Enemy #1: With Lin Tao's death cementing his guilt in the eyes of the public and Xiaoyaozi fueling the flames, Bai Jiusi is now a reviled enemy. He is captured, severely weakened without his Spirit Pearl, and completely alone. How can he possibly prove his innocence?
- Li Qingyue's Fate: Li Qingyue is alive, but unconscious, saved only by Bai Jiusi's sacrifice. When will she awaken, and what will she find when she does? Her power may be the only thing that can save him now.
- The Peach Blossom Spring: A new subplot is introduced as a monkey spirit reports to an unseen figure named Zhang Suan that the mythical "Peach Blossom Spring" has been found. This is a classic location in Chinese lore, often representing a hidden utopia. Its discovery is sure to be a major plot point moving forward.
- New Threats Emerge: With Fan Ling'er now a puppet under her father's control, a new, unpredictable threat is in play.
- Whose Scheme? Bai Jiusi's final question is the most haunting. Was he accusing the manipulative Xiaoyaozi? Or did he realize that a much larger, more intelligent force has been pulling the strings all along, orchestrating every move, including Lin Tao's tragic, perfectly-timed death? The game has clearly changed, and the true enemy may not be who we think.
