A Favor from the Past
The Ask
Things get complicated when family shows up. Wen Pu's older brother comes to the city from their hometown. He brings his son, Baoliang, with him. He wants Wen Pu to pull some strings. He needs a city job for Baoliang. This puts Wen Pu in a tough spot. There are no extra positions, and worker quotas are incredibly tight.
This isn't just any brother. He raised Wen Pu's son while Wen Pu was busy with the revolution. The brother's family sacrificed a lot. They gave Wen Pu's son the best food. They even made their own son, Baoliang, drop out of school to support the family. Wen Pu owes him. Big time.
The Conflict
Earlier in the day, Wen Pu’s son heard his father say no to helping Baoliang. He got angry and confronted his dad. Wen Pu, already stressed, lost his temper and slapped him. The boy ran off with Baoliang.
Later that night, Wen Pu found them by the river. He brought them bread and actually apologized. Yi Yi gently told Wen Pu later that he can't lose his temper with his son. He definitely can't hit him. The boy is old enough to have his own opinions. She thinks they can solve problems just by talking patiently.
The Solution
Yi Yi saw how desperate Wen Pu's brother was. She immediately stepped in to help. Her factory happens to need a male worker. The job doesn't require any special skills, just the ability to read. It's a perfect fit for Baoliang. Wen Pu's brother was thrilled. It seems Yi Yi is the one who calms Wen Pu down when his work and family stress gets to be too much.
A Different Kind of Goddess
Yi Yi went over to Wen Pu's house on the weekend. They started talking about Greek mythology. They connected on a whole new level. Yi Yi said her personal hero isn't a major god like Apollo. Instead, she admires a goddess who went through a lot. After all her struggles, this goddess chose to become a normal person. She wanted to live and die with the person she loved. Fame and status mean nothing to Yi Yi.
Wen Pu really admires this about her. They just get each other when they talk about literature. Their connection is getting deeper. He then gave Yi Yi a camera for her fieldwork. She was very happy to get the gift.
