Spoiler Alert
Lin Siyun Holds It Together
So, after that whole mess with Deputy Director Dong, Cheng Ao is ready to go find the guy and teach him a lesson. He sees Lin Siyun holding a pen so tightly her knuckles are white, and he just wants to fix it.
But Shen Yiqun grabs him. He stops Cheng Ao from starting a fight. He makes a good point, though. They need Dong on their side if they're ever going to get the hospital running. Cheng Ao isn't happy about it, but he backs down. Lin Siyun doesn't say a word.
Instead, she just walks out of the room. She puts her game face on and gets right back to work. It's a Chamber of Commerce event, so there are important people everywhere. She starts networking with a woman named "Auntie Mei" like nothing ever happened. I have to say, Cheng Ao is impressed. He notes that most people would have run home crying. Lin Siyun is all business, focusing on the bigger picture.
A Murder and a New Hospital
Things get messy at the event. A traitor gets killed in the washroom. The murder looks like it was done by the Communist Party. Cheng Ao actually recognizes someone who looks very suspicious. It’s a guy he used to work with, the head of the shantytown area. Cheng Ao knows him and decides to risk it, sneaking the man out of there.
On a much better note, we learn more about "Auntie Mei," who is Shen's wife. She's a progressive woman. She ends up buying Lin Siyun's old family home. Her plan is to turn it into a maternity hospital.Lin Siyun is overjoyed. She thinks about how all her siblings were born in that house. Now, many more babies will be born there safely.
A Question Gets You Jailed
The Arrest
The episode then shifts to one of Cheng Ao's subordinates, a guy named Xiao Wu. He's worried about his younger brother, Xiao Shan. The kid wants to join the Communist Party. Xiao Wu asks Cheng Ao to talk some sense into him.
Cheng Ao talks to the kid. But he sees that Xiao Shan is just a passionate, patriotic young man who wants to defend his country. So, Cheng Ao doesn't try to stop him. Not long after, he gets a call. Xiao Shan has been arrested.
The reason is pretty shocking. At his military academy, Xiao Shan just asked a simple question. "Why do we have to get rid of the Communist Party before we can defeat the Japanese imperialists?" That's it. For that, the military police arrested him and branded him a Communist sympathizer.
The Beating
Cheng Ao immediately goes to Shen Yiqun for help. Shen has a lot of pull and manages to get Xiao Shan released.
But when he gets out, it's bad. He was perfectly healthy when they took him in. Now, he's so badly beaten he has to be rushed to the emergency room. The doctors say he's in danger of becoming a vegetable. All this for asking a question that was on everyone's mind. Cheng Ao is furious. He decides he's going to help Xiao Shan sue. Even his adoptive father, who stays out of politics, agrees this is the right thing to do. It’s a matter of principle.
Cheng Ao Goes to Court
The Trial
The maternity hospital officially opens in Lin Siyun's old house. A young relative, Xiao Yi, even stays in one of the patient rooms while going to school. Cheng Ao starts spending more time at the hospital, helping out where he can. As they work together, Lin Siyun really starts to see him differently.
Cheng Ao acts as Xiao Shan's lawyer, and the case goes to court. It becomes a huge deal. It attracts a lot of attention from progressive people who just want to kick the Japanese out of the country. In the end, the judge rules in Xiao Shan's favor.
An Awkward Celebration
Xiao Shan and his brother, Xiao Wu, go to thank Cheng Ao. They're thrilled that they could win and prove there's still some fight left in people. Lin Siyun is also really happy about the victory. She invites Cheng Ao out to dinner to celebrate.
Then Xiao Shan, who doesn't have much of a filter, blurts out that he's hungry too. His brother is totally embarrassed by the move. But Lin Siyun just laughs and invites them both to come along. And just like that, Cheng Ao's potential date turns into a dinner party for four.
