"Green Hills Are Home" Episode 27: Sibling Rivalry, Debts, and a Whole Lotta Heartache
Things are really hitting the fan in "Green Hills Are Home"! This episode is a rollercoaster of financial woes, family tensions, and a dash of hope. Let's dive in.
The episode opens with the fallout from Chen Ling's shady dealings. Since Feng Sao (Sis-in-law Feng) acted as guarantor, she's getting hounded by everyone and their grandma for the money Chen Ling owes. With Chen Ling nowhere to be found, they take their demands to Feng Sao's doorstep. Meanwhile, Dong Erlin gets a rude awakening when Chen Ling's creditors show up, waving promissory notes and driving off with his car!
Just when Feng Sao is trying to explain her side of the story, news arrives that Dong Erlin is back. Cue the angry mob heading to the Dong residence! Dong Erlin gets cornered in his own yard, bombarded with demands for repayment. But wait! Chen Ling makes a dramatic entrance, cool as a cucumber, and declares that anyone wanting their money back will only get the principal – no interest. She somehow manages to spin the project as still profitable, and the crowd actually buys it, dispersing in hopes of future riches. Feng Sao initially wants her money back, but when Chen Ling flashes a wad of cash, greed takes over, and she decides to stick with Chen Ling, hoping for that sweet interest.
No sooner has Feng Sao left than Dong Erlin tries to give the money to his dad, but Chen Ling stops him, revealing her own troubles. As they step outside, they're confronted by a shady character demanding 50,000 yuan on behalf of someone else. To prevent him from taking the car, Chen Ling hands over the cash. Elsewhere, the construction workers discover the site is shut down and start demanding their wages from Chen Ling. Wei Kuaotui, the foreman, calls Chen Ling, who assures him that they'll get paid once work resumes.
Meanwhile, Feng Qiulan visits Grandpa Dong in the hospital. He's consumed with guilt and regret over the failed investment. The money that was supposed to change their lives has become a burden on his heart. It's so bad that his condition worsens, and he needs an immediate transfer to another hospital or he might not make it.
Chen Ling can't reach Ma San on the phone and fears for her child's safety. She asks Dong Erlin to go to the hospital alone. Grandma Dong confronts Dong Yan about why she hasn't arranged the hospital transfer, learning that Dong Yan is waiting for Dong Erlin to provide the money. Grandma Dong angrily reminds Dong Yan that she once took 300,000 yuan and now doesn't want to spend a penny. Dong Dalin has already contributed his 100,000 yuan scholarship money, and Dong Yan promises to find another 100,000 yuan.
Chen Ling picks up Dong Xin from school, urging him to take the bank card and bag she's given him and come home with her immediately. Dong Dalin, wanting to ease Grandpa Dong's mind, lies and says that Dong Erlin has already received 200,000 yuan from Chen Ling. He tells Dong Erlin to play along. Feng Qiulan brings soup to the hospital, and Dong Dalin suggests that his wife accompany Grandma Dong home, but Grandma Dong insists on staying at the hospital. Dong Dalin and Dong Erlin quickly arrange for their father's transfer.
Dong Xin senses that something is wrong with his mother, but Chen Ling keeps her problems hidden. Feng Qiulan brings Dong Peng to Chen Ling's, planning to return to their hometown, while Dong Peng will stay in the school dormitory. Dong Xin wants to go home with Feng Qiulan, but Chen Ling asks them to go inside so she can talk to Feng Qiulan privately, telling her that she wants to keep Dong Xin with her for now, fearing what the creditors might do.
Now, the villagers and workers are trying to take over Chen Ling's house. Feng Qiulan is heartbroken when she sees this. Grandpa Dong, realizing that money has corrupted their family bonds, tells Dong Dalin and Dong Erlin to support Grandma Dong and hold the family together.
Feng Qiulan answers a call from Dong Peng, who mentions that the kang (a traditional Chinese heated bed) at home must be cold. However, Dong Xin has already arranged for the village kids to heat it up and clean the house, which makes Feng Qiulan feel grateful. Chen Ling learns that her house has been seized, and Feng Qiulan urges her to confront the situation. Chen Ling tearfully calls Dong Erlin, begging him to handle the house issue, but he hangs up on her. Desperate, she turns to Feng Qiulan, who promises to ask Dong Dalin for help.
