Mie Zui: Episode 14 Recap & Spoilers
Alright, so Episode 14 kicks off with some serious tension. Luo Yin gets back home and immediately senses something's off – like, someone broke in off. He grabs a baseball bat (smart move!) and cautiously checks things out, but nope, he still gets jumped and overpowered by several guys.
Then, we get a video call from the man pulling the strings, Mo Bei. He's not playing nice. Mo Bei shows Luo Yin pictures of his daughter, making it crystal clear: cooperate, or else. Talk about pressure!
Just as things are looking grim, Ning Zhen shows up outside Luo Yin's door. She bumps into a delivery guy and gets a clever idea, pretending she's the delivery person to try and get Luo Yin to open up. She knocks, but there's dead silence from inside. Ning Zhen, being sharp, ducks out of sight. The goons inside peek out, see no one, and immediately figure whoever knocked must be the police. Smart, but not smart enough.
Because Luo Yin is terrified for his daughter, he has to play it cool when Ning Zhen eventually gets inside (or perhaps is let in after the initial scare?). He acts like nothing's wrong. Ning Zhen does a quick sweep of the place but doesn't spot the intruders hiding. As Luo Yin is seeing her out, the hidden thugs make their move, trying to grab both him and Ning Zhen.
But plot twist! Cops suddenly burst in, led by – wait for it – the delivery guy from earlier! Turns out, Ning Zhen had already teamed up with the local police, and the delivery guy was an undercover officer. Her arrival was just a slight, unexpected hiccup in their plan. Phew!
Later, Ning Zhen spots Mo Bei driving away and overhears something suggesting he and Luo Yin struck some kind of deal. She calls Luo Yin immediately, trying to appeal to his conscience, reminding him of all the people hurt by Jiang Xiao (the case they're all tangled up in).
Luo Yin, seemingly trying to regain some normalcy (or maybe just follow Mo Bei's instructions?), goes back to work at his psychology practice. He cancels almost all his appointments but agrees to see one persistent female patient. Meanwhile, Ning Zhen is back at the police station, getting congrats from her colleagues. Knowing Lu Fan will probably come looking for her, she tells her coworkers to say she hasn't returned if he asks. And sure enough, Lu Fan shows up shortly after she gets there.
The focus then shifts back to the big case: Jiang Xiao's retrial is set for the end of the month. Jiang Yan (presumably related to Jiang Xiao and fighting for him) is feeling confident. She's got new evidence, thanks to Mo Bei, and the previous judge, Judge Liu, has been suspended and replaced. She's so pleased with Mo Bei's work that she plans to reward him. On the flip side, Wu Keran is stressed, worried the retrial could overturn things negatively (likely for the victims' side).
Back with Luo Yin, he meets the patient who insisted on seeing him. It's an older woman whose daughter (a patient Luo Yin evaluated for mental illness) is about to be sentenced. The mother begs Luo Yin for help, which visibly triggers Luo Yin, reminding him of Jiang Yan pleading for his help with Jiang Xiao's case. You can see the moral dilemma weighing on him.
Retrial day arrives. In a major twist, Luo Yin gets on the stand and completely changes his testimony. He now claims Jiang Xiao was mentally unstable – suffering from schizophrenia, specifically – when the murder occurred.
While Lu Fan is finding Luo Yin and complaining bitterly about how someone (the source text mentions a Chen Guohao, but given Luo Yin just testified, the implication might be about the general injustice or even Luo Yin's actions) provided false evidence allowing criminals to walk free, the verdict comes down in the courtroom.
Another twist! Someone reported that Jiang Xiao was faking his mental illness and that Luo Yin's psychiatric evaluation was bogus. Based on this, the court finds Jiang Xiao GUILTY of murder and sentences him to death. Hearing the sentence, Jiang Xiao completely loses it, his behavior becoming erratic on the spot.
Since Ning Zhen has been avoiding him, Lu Fan waits for her outside her home. He tells her everything that happened at the trial and then leaves, putting the ball in her court: does she want to keep digging for the deeper truth, or let it go?
Ning Zhen goes to see Luo Yin again. Now, she understands: he was threatened into signing off on that initial (or perhaps the changed?) assessment. Luo Yin gives her a cryptic but crucial clue: the real identity of the mysterious figure known as "Shen Yuan" (Abyss) is likely hidden somewhere within the details of the case itself.
Taking the hint, Ning Zhen goes home and dives back into the case files, trying to piece together who Shen Yuan could be.
The episode ends on a somber note: back in detention, Jiang Xiao attempts suicide. He's discovered by guards and rushed to the hospital.
