Episode 2 Recap & Spoilers: The Runaway, The Mistaken Identity, and Some Hard Truths

So, Zhao Dongcheng has to head off to work, but he’s not about to leave his runaway brother, Guan Xu, to his own devices. He ropes in Shen Xinxin, who’s on a day off, to play babysitter. Predictably, Guan Xu isn't having any of it and, like a true escape artist, shimmies out a window. His first stop? The hospital, to reclaim his ID and wallet from Yu Shi. But, in a classic drama meet-cute (or meet-confused?), he bumps into a little girl named Ruihua. Turns out, Ruihua is one of Shen Xinxin's patients who experiences periods of not recognizing people. This time, she latches onto Guan Xu, convinced he’s her "A Ping Gege" (Brother A Ping) and demands ice cream, even saying she’ll look for him on her next hospital visit. This little encounter sparks an idea for Yu Shi and Shen Xinxin – maybe this is how they can get Guan Xu to stick around.

Back at the office, things get heated between Guan Xu and Zhao Dongcheng. Guan Xu is still in denial mode, refusing to acknowledge Zhao Dongcheng as his brother, memories clouded by leaving with his mom when he was just a little tyke.

Later, Yu Shi and Shen Xinxin suggest grabbing a meal, bringing Guan Xu along. Before they eat, Guan Xu heads to the restroom and runs into Ruihua again. Plot twist! Ruihua isn't actually a little girl; she's an elderly woman, and the man with her is her husband. Her memory is fragmented, poor thing. Her husband shares their touching story with Guan Xu, and it clearly strikes a chord with our reluctant runaway.

After dinner, Guan Xu and Zhao Dongcheng head home. Zhao Dongcheng tries to open up a conversation about their childhood, and we learn that Guan Xu does have some faint memories of his older brother, mostly of tagging along like a little shadow. Then Zhao Dongcheng drops a question that ignites Guan Xu’s anger: "How's Mom?" Guan Xu is furious. His brother apparently had no idea that their mother passed away in a tragic car accident. In her final moments, she desperately wanted to see Zhao Dongcheng, but Guan Xu couldn't get in touch with him.

Zhao Dongcheng is clearly apologetic about their mother. He then asks Guan Xu about Guan Shan's whereabouts. Guan Xu admits he doesn’t know either. He’d returned home to a ransacked place, finding only a note from Guan Shan on a scenic brochure, telling Guan Xu to wait for him at this new location – which is why Guan Xu showed up in the first place. Seeing an opportunity, Zhao Dongcheng manages to persuade Guan Xu to work in Yu Shi's department for three months, promising to give him Guan Shan's contact information after that.

And just like that, Guan Xu is officially an employee at the community hospital! The hospital director is thrilled, even giving him a personal welcome at the entrance. Guan Xu, however, has no clue what he’s in for. Working in the chronic disease department, he’s about to get a serious reality check. His initial tasks are pretty mundane – helping move things, even playing traffic cop when someone’s car blocks the way.

Later, Yu Shi takes him along to conduct a survey of local residents. It doesn't go smoothly. They get kicked out of one home by an elderly resident's son, who aggressively accuses them of being scammers. Awkwardly enough, Yu Shi's mother happens to witness this whole scene from the hallway but ducks away, not wanting to embarrass her daughter.

When Yu Shi gets home from work, her mother starts subtly (and then not-so-subtly) trying to convince her to go back to her old job at the prestigious Grade A hospital. She confesses she’s embarrassed to tell people where Yu Shi works now and always has to explain it. But Yu Shi genuinely loves her current job and has no intention of leaving. This leads to a heated argument, and Yu Shi storms out for a run without eating, leaving her mother fuming too.
