Episode Summary
Mei Chengyi's father-in-law actively tries to sabotage Chengyi's new relationship to prevent his grandchildren from having a stepmother. Episode 2 of "Double Happiness" throws Mei Chengyi's father-in-law into a panic over Chengyi's new girlfriend. His wife suggests a plan: sabotage the relationship. Their goal is twofold: to ensure their grandchildren, Mei Yu'an and Mei Yule, avoid having a stepmother, and perhaps, to position their own younger daughter, Youyou, as a more suitable focus for Chengyi's attention or even a partner.
Meanwhile, the complicated situation between Xu Kaixin and her ex-husband, Qian Hao, escalates. Sister Lili uncovers some vital intelligence for Xu Kaixin: Qian Hao's current wife, Hu Xiaojiao, has been trying unsuccessfully to conceive for three years. Adding to the pressure, Qian Hao's mother is battling cancer, and her most fervent wish is for a grandchild. It appears Qian Hao has returned primarily to fight for custody of their son, Xiaomi.
Xu Kaixin, however, remains unmoved by Qian Hao's family predicament. She carries the scars of a painful past. Years prior, she mistakenly believed her child, Dami, had leukemia. Desperate for money, she found herself callously blocked by both Qian Hao and Hu Xiaojiao. When she appealed to Qian Hao's mother for help, she was dismissively handed 1,000 yuan, an act that made her feel like a beggar. The despair nearly drove Xu Kaixin to suicide. These bitter memories reinforce her belief that Qian Hao's family is fundamentally cold-hearted, and his mother's illness is not enough to earn her sympathy.
Back with Mei Chengyi, his father-in-law is already setting his schemes in motion. His initial tactic is to prevent Youyou from taking Mei Yu'an and Mei Yule to school, aiming to disrupt Chengyi's routine. Racing against the clock to get to work on time, Chengyi hastily hires a city courier service to get the children to school, then sprints to his job. His in-laws, who live in the same residential complex, witness a stranger collecting the children and jump to the terrifying conclusion that they've been kidnapped. A frantic phone call from Youyou to Chengyi eventually clears up the misunderstanding, but the father-in-law, still deeply unsettled, insists on going to see for himself.
Xu Kaixin, having recognized Mei Chengyi from a previous encounter, has been consistently warning her friend, the matchmaker Li Xiaoxiao, that Chengyi is a "scumbag." Unfortunately for Li Xiaoxiao, she has already accepted a significant membership fee from Chengyi and is obligated to find him dates. In a bind, Li Xiaoxiao implores Xu Kaixin to go on one blind date with Chengyi, offering her 600 yuan from the fee as an incentive. Xu Kaixin reluctantly agrees.
Mei Chengyi's father-in-law, his plan involving the children's school run having failed, now shifts his strategy to directly targeting any potential "stepmother." Youyou's mother, witnessing her husband's machinations, feels utterly helpless.
Using the contact information provided by the dating agency, Mei Chengyi gets in touch with Xu Kaixin, and they arrange to meet at 6 PM. However, an urgent call from Xiaomi's kindergarten pulls Xu Kaixin away. Qian Hao's mother had appeared at the kindergarten without notice, demanding to take Xiaomi home. Because Xiaomi didn't recognize her, the teachers correctly refused to release him.
When Xu Kaixin arrives at the kindergarten, she discovers that her son, Xiaomi, has already masterfully handled the delicate situation. With surprising astuteness for his age, he not only managed to gently send Qian Hao's mother on her way but also charmed her into giving him a large red envelope (a traditional monetary gift). Xiaomi immediately presents the money to his mother, telling her to buy herself something nice. Xu Kaixin is profoundly moved by her son's intelligence and thoughtfulness.
Elsewhere, Qian Hao brings Hu Xiaojiao to his parents' home for a visit. Their arrival is soured by a neighbor in the building, who loudly and pointedly remarks that Hu Xiaojiao's inability to have children is karmic retribution for "stealing" someone else's husband. Hu Xiaojiao is visibly upset by the public shaming, but Qian Hao manages to soothe her. Inside, the atmosphere is no warmer. Qian Hao's mother squarely blames Hu Xiaojiao for her infertility, treats her with disdain, and even bluntly suggests to Qian Hao that he should divorce Hu Xiaojiao and remarry Xu Kaixin. Qian Hao, however, cannot agree; his company is reliant on a project connected to Hu Xiaojiao's influential uncle, making divorce an unviable option.
The arranged blind date between Mei Chengyi and Xu Kaixin eventually takes place. Xu Kaixin gets to the restaurant first and orders a generous amount of food. When Mei Chengyi arrives, he opts for just a glass of water.
Concurrently, Mei Chengyi's father-in-law, who had offered to look after Chengyi's two children for the evening, receives a text message from an old friend. The message includes photographs clearly showing Mei Chengyi on a date with a woman. This discovery ignites his disapproval, making him more resolute than ever to destroy Chengyi's chances at a new relationship.
