Qingchuan's Veil of Vengeance Episode 7: A Prison Truth and an Exposed Identity
Recap & Spoilers
This episode unspools two major secrets that change the game for the Mo siblings. In a prison cell, Mo Qinglian finally learns the devastating truth of his captivity, while Mo Qingchuan is forced to reveal her deadly skills, exposing her identity to a crucial ally and a dangerous enemy.
The episode opens with a familiar, somber ritual: Cao Yuyan, disguised in black and a mask, visits her son, Mo Qinglian, in his cell. For five years, he has languished here, believing he is a prisoner in the State of Chu. In reality, he is being held in the State of Xia. Cao Yuyan regularly brings him his favorite snack, Silver Thread Pastry, a specialty of Xia. Mo Qinglian, who calls his mysterious visitor "Little Black," assumes his parents are sending them, unaware the woman before him is his own mother, silently enduring his pain.
During this visit, Mo Qinglian is overcome with memories. He tells "Little Black" about his childhood, recalling a time he was punished by his father and ran away. Hungry and alone, he stumbled upon Silver Thread Pastry and thought it was the most delicious thing in the world; after that, his mother always bought it for him. The story breaks Cao Yuyan's heart. Overwhelmed by despair, Mo Qinglian begs her to deliver a letter to his mother to save him, but she cannot speak or agree. When he speaks of wanting to die, she leaves, only to return with lotus seeds, a silent promise that there is still hope for a future.
Unseen, Mo Qingchuan has followed her mother. After Cao Yuyan leaves the main cell, Mo Qingchuan intervenes, knocking her unconscious. Mo Qinglian is stunned to see his brother, begging to be taken home. Instead, Mo Qingchuan reveals their mother's face, and the truth crashes down on Mo Qinglian: he is in a State of Xia prison, and his own mother has been his secret visitor.
Meanwhile, upon returning to his small courtyard, Mo Qingchuan finds Xia Qiguang waiting. Xia Qiguang jealously probes about who she met, annoyed at the thought of her sharing her plum wine with anyone else. His prying is interrupted by a far greater threat. Mo Junyu, having seen Mo Qingchuan's face and confirming her return, decides he must eliminate her before she is exposed.
On the night of Jiang Kui's birthday, Mo Junyu sends five of his best assassins to the courtyard. The fight confirms his long-held suspicion: the woman he knows as Mo Wang is the legendary general, Mo Qingchuan.
Knowing she is no longer safe in the courtyard, Xia Qiguang immediately takes Mo Qingchuan to the protection of his home, the Prince Jing Manor.Soon after, Mo Qingchuan's friend, the physician Fang Du, arrives—he was summoned by a carrier pigeon she sent earlier to treat an injury on Xia Qiguang's wrist. As he tends to them, Fang Du reveals a worrying secret: the martial arts technique Mo Qingchuan uses is incredibly powerful but also damages her own body. He warns Xia Qiguang that she practices this self-destructive art only to protect her family and is at risk of succumbing to its dangerous side effects.
As Fang Du leaves to prepare medicine, Xia Qiguang watches over the resting Mo Qingchuan, the images of his master, Mo Wang, and the general Mo Qingchuan finally merging into one. He resolves to protect her at all costs, understanding that with her identity now exposed, the dangers she faces are greater than ever.
