Episode 7 of Moonlit Reunion begins with Wu Zhen, in her civet cat form, racing to the West Suburb forest. She finds Shan Posuo is already dead—completely obliterated, body and soul. Wu Zhen can tell right away that this wasn't the work of any ordinary cultivator.
Meanwhile, Mei Zhuyu is trying to meditate, but he can't get the image of Wu Zhen leaning over to give him air out of his head. He figures his training isn't as solid as he thought, and it's causing him to have some... wild dreams. Remembering his master's teachings, he quickly forces the distracting thoughts down, locking them away for now.
Over at the bustling Demon Market, Elder Hui stands calmly in front of a mural, acting as if the whole West Suburb incident has nothing to do with him. Wu Zhen shows up and confronts him, but he denies everything, mocking her for being a half-demon and even disrespecting the authority of the Cat Duke. Just then, other demons appear, and Ling Xiao steps forward, claiming he personally saw Elder Hui use the forbidden Soul-Wandering technique. The crowd is stunned.
With a witness, Wu Zhen declares she's going to test Elder Hui for using the forbidden art. She summons her Flowing Light Whip, a weapon that can detect traces of a spirit leaving its body. As the whip crackles with lightning and glows with a blood-red light, it reveals the tell-tale signs of backlash from the technique. Seeing he's been caught, Elder Hui tries to run, but Wu Zhen stops him. With each lash of the whip, she forces him to confess a crime: freeing the rat demons, working with Shan Posuo, and plotting against his own kind. Once he's confessed, she personally drags him to the Demon Prison to restore order to the market.
Later, the Wordless Book goes to the prison alone, planning to make Elder Hui pay for what he's done. Cornered, Elder Hui admits he stole the Thunderstruck Wood wood to protect Boneless Bone (Boneless Bone), but he keeps his real reasons secret. Even in prison, he tries to stir up trouble, hinting that the Wordless Book, despite appearing as a blank page, might not be so pure itself.
In another part of the city, Liu Taizhen has had enough of Mei Si showing up at his mansion to "exorcise demons." In a fit of anger, he has his men tie Mei Si to a tree. Wu Zhen arrives to sort things out, but Mei Si stubbornly insists there's a snake demon in the house and even accuses Liu Taizhen of being possessed. In the scuffle, he accidentally rips Liu Taizhen's outer robe, then panics, clumsily throws it back on him, and bolts.
Word comes that villagers are again falling sick from a strange miasma. Wu Zhen and Liu Taizhen rush to the village, only to find Mei Zhuyu already investigating. Three villagers are unconscious and in bad shape. Suddenly, a woman screams, accusing a man of peeping on her while she was bathing. Wu Zhen bursts in and grabs the guy, but Mei Zhuyu recognizes him—it's his junior from his old sect, Shuang Jiang. Because he's hiding his past, Mei Zhuyu can't let on that he knows him.
Shuang Jiang frantically explains he's a Celestial Master from Changxi Palace who got lost in the mountains. He claims he was just trying to cool off when he fell and was mistaken for a peeper. To prove he's legit, he takes out a magical artifact and says he can cure the villagers. His technique is a mess, but Mei Zhuyu secretly uses his own power to fix the spell. The miasma is drawn out, the villagers wake up, and Shuang Jiang has no idea he had help.
The grateful villagers thank Shuang Jiang profusely. Wu Zhen turns to share the news with Mei Zhuyu, but he's already slipped away, worried Shuang Jiang will recognize him. Their old bond is now a dangerous liability. Wu Zhen offers Shuang Jiang a ride back to the city, which he happily accepts. But when he gets in the carriage, he comes face-to-face with Mei Zhuyu. Thinking fast, Mei Zhuyu calls him "Eleventh Brother," and Shuang Jiang immediately plays along. Mei Zhuyu tells a suspicious Wu Zhen that they're just old friends from the same hometown.
Once they're back in the capital, Mei Zhuyu and Shuang Jiang hurry off. Wu Zhen watches them go, more certain than ever that Mei Zhuyu is hiding something. That night, Shuang Jiang tells Mei Zhuyu the truth: he ran away from Changxi Palace because he couldn't stand the tough exams their senior brother put in place after becoming the new leader. Mei Zhuyu agrees to let him stay, but with three rules: 1) they'll pretend to be cousins, 2) they will never mention Changxi Palace, and 3) Shuang Jiang is not to go off and do things on his own.
The next morning, Shuang Jiang wakes up and finds someone else in the house. Thinking it's a burglar, he draws his sword. Wen Hua, seeing him, thinks he's the intruder and grabs a broom to fight back. They eventually figure out it's all a misunderstanding. At breakfast, Shuang Jiang isn't thrilled with the simple porridge and side dishes. Seeing this, Mei Zhuyu grabs his case files and heads out the door, determined to earn some money to buy meat.
At the Xuanjian Division, Liu Gongshen is grilling a nervous Xu Luan about the West Suburb case. Mei Zhuyu arrives just in time with the final report. Just as Liu Gongshen is about to praise him, Mei Zhuyu stuns everyone by formally requesting to be put in charge as the new head of the division, leaving Xu Luan looking furious. At the same time, a disappointed Wu Zhen, who was turned down by Mei Zhuyu for a get-together, decides to bring up Shuang Jiang with the Wordless Book and Hú Zhū to see what she can find out.
