The End of the Road
This episode felt like a finale. We finally get the big showdown. All the pieces fall into place. Chongyi Biao has his moment of clarity. He realizes the only way to stop the monster army is to kill Anashi. He goes on a rampage, fighting through everyone to get to Gongsun Wuyu. In a final, desperate move, he takes out Anashi and himself at the same time.
While that's happening, Jiang Wenhuan makes his own move. He destroys the creepy human-skin drum. The effect is instant. The monsters just drop dead. Gongsun Wuyu sees that her entire plan has fallen apart. She runs and hides in a cave.
A Family Tragedy
Jiang Wenhuan tracks Gongsun Wuyu to her cave. He's not just there for revenge. His brother, Jiang Wen Feng, is her prisoner. He's been infected with some kind of corpse poison and is in agony. Jiang Wenhuan thought he had a connection with Gongsun Wuyu, but he learns she's been poisoning him all along.
Gongsun Wuyu decides to play her last card. She uses a special drum to control Jiang Wen Feng. She forces him to attack his own brother. Jiang Wen Feng fights the control with everything he has. He gets a moment of clarity. He screams at Jiang Wenhuan to leave and save himself. Then, to protect his brother, he kills himself right in front of him.
The Villain's Backstory
Gongsun Wuyu just watches Jiang Wen Feng die. She cries, muttering that this is the only way they can be together forever. Then she unloads her entire tragic story on Jiang Wenhuan.
She says she gave birth to a stillborn baby. She was ready to die herself. But the baby miraculously came back to life. It then killed the soldiers who had slaughtered her village. She realized her child was immortal. That's when her hatred took over. She started plotting her revenge against the Shang King. She experimented on Ning Bohou's son. She killed Kunwu's family to get the "holy maidens" she needed to make the drums for her immortal army.
After her confession, she looks at Jiang Wen Feng's body. She seems to finally feel the weight of what she's done. She jumps into a lake and drowns herself.
The Aftermath
The surviving young lords hold a funeral for Chongyi Biao and the others they lost. It's a somber scene. They think back to when they first arrived in Zhongli, full of hope. Now, so many are gone. Jiang Wenhuan finds a quiet spot to mourn Kunwu. He pours out some plum wine and has an imaginary drink with his lost friend.
The next day, A'si decides she's had enough. She gets her horse ready to leave. Jiang Wenhuan rushes to see her off. He tells her to be safe, admitting he doesn't have many people left to care about. A'si nods and tells him they'll meet again in the capital.
The whole disaster forces the Shang King to act. He issues a decree. The search for the immortality pill is over. It's now banned.
Jiang Wenhuan and Xin Jia patrol the ruins of Zhongli. The once-bustling place is now just a wreck. As they look out, they see a figure on horseback riding toward them. They can't believe their eyes. It looks exactly like Kunwu.
