Episode Summary
A Japanese officer named Kawano arrives in Songlin Town, putting everyone on edge. He quickly identifies several key players in the local resistance network. Innkeeper Tong, fearing capture, passes a codebook to Gao Yunhu before disappearing. Gao Yunhu's attempt to flee is stopped when the town is sealed. The episode ends with two manhunts beginning: one for the missing innkeeper and another for a lost little boy.

The Enemy Within
A new player just walked into Songlin Town. He’s not friendly. This episode, we see the dominoes start to fall as a Japanese officer arrives to clean up a messy situation.
A New Face in Town
The episode kicks off with Pang Sihai getting a notice. A Japanese officer named Kawano is on his way to Songlin Town. Pang gets all dressed up to meet him. His wife immediately assumes he's going to see Caifeng, who just got back. He has to explain it’s official business before she lets him leave.
Kawano doesn't waste any time. He shows up disguised as a man named Boss Zhu and checks into the Anfu Inn. Right away, he starts asking the innkeeper, Tong, about a man named Liu Banhu. Tong says he hasn't seen Liu in a long time. While this is happening, Caifeng comes back with her son, Gaya. Kawano watches as Tong offers to treat them to a meal, noting how well-liked the innkeeper seems.
Old Friends and New Problems
We get a nice reunion between Da Kuo Zhi and Gao Yunhu. She sets up a big meal for him, and it's clear they've missed each other. Things get emotional. Gao Yunhu confesses his feelings for her, and they share a close embrace.
Their moment is cut short. Pang Sihai shows up at the tavern looking for Da Kuo Zhi. He's just had a rough meeting with Kawano. Kawano is furious that Pang knew nothing about a resistance contact point Liu Banhu set up in town. He's also angry that Pang was unaware of two resistance fighters running a local shop. Pang was completely blindsided.
Now, Pang is trying to do damage control. He demands to search Da Kuo Zhi's place, but she refuses to let him in. He asks her about the two men who ran the mountain goods store. She lies straight to his face. She claims they were just bandits who robbed her and ran off. She then yells at him and kicks him out.
Hiding in Plain Sight
Gao Yunhu wants to leave. He doesn't want to bring trouble to Da Kuo Zhi. She convinces him to stay, worried he'll be in danger if he leaves. She tells him to pretend to be the new tavern boss.
Meanwhile, Kawano is getting the lay of the land. Pang Sihai gives him a tour of the town. Kawano spots Gaya sitting outside the inn and strikes up a conversation. From their little chat, he learns that Gaya is Tang Deyuan's son.
Speaking of Tang Deyuan, he's trying to skip town. He gives Tian Xiaogui some money, but Tian wants to come with him. Tian also demands to know where Lu Changshan is. Tang says he doesn't know and tries to leave, but Tian gets desperate and begs him for answers. Tang just walks out.
Right after being rejected, Tian Xiaogui has a stroke of luck. He sees Lu Changshan on the street, working as a shoeshiner.
The Net Tightens
Gao Yunhu goes to the inn to officially check in. His real goal is to meet Innkeeper Tong. Kawano, who is still there, watches him closely. As Gao Yunhu gets settled, Gaya walks by and casually calls him "uncle." Kawano sees everything.
Gao Yunhu meets with Tong and gives him the secret code. Tong is massively relieved to make contact. But later, Tong starts to get nervous. He realizes the new guest, "Boss Zhu," is suspicious, especially since Pang Sihai spent all day with him. Fearing he's about to be caught, Tong gives the resistance codebook to Gao Yunhu for safekeeping.
Gao Yunhu tries to leave Songlin Town immediately. He gets to the edge of town only to find that the Japanese have sealed it. No one gets out.
Back in Mudanjiang, Lu Changshan buys some snacks for Tian Xiaogui. Tian is broken. He wants to leave with Lu and escape the Japanese. His hands shake so badly he can't even strike a match to light a cigarette. Lu sees the state he's in and agrees to take him along.
The situation in Songlin Town gets worse. Kawano questions Gaya further and learns two critical things. First, Tang Deyuan is expected to arrive in town soon. Second, Gao Yunhu once stayed at their house. Just then, Pang Sihai rushes in with more news. He's discovered that Innkeeper Tong is a distant relative of Liu Banhu. And now, Tong has vanished. Kawano orders a town-wide manhunt.
In the middle of all this chaos, Caifeng can't find her son, Gaya. She runs to Da Kuo Zhi for help. Da Kuo Zhi then finds Pang Sihai, begging him to help look for the boy. But Pang is under orders. He tells her he's too busy searching for Tong and can't help.
