Episode Summary
Gao Yunhu escapes a city-wide search by hiding with Dongmei. A horrific tragedy strikes when Kawano murders the child Gaya to set a trap for the resistance. Devastated, Gaya's father, Tang Deyuan, abandons his plans to flee and instead vows to kill Kawano, setting him on a path of revenge.

A Cornered Man
Gao Yunhu is Trapped
This episode kicks off with Kawano putting the pieces together. He learns from Gaya that Gao Yunhu had been staying at his place. That's all the confirmation he needs. He's now certain Gao Yunhu is with the resistance.
So, he orders Pang Sihai to lead a city-wide manhunt. He even brings in the Kempeitai, the military police. The net is closing in fast. Gao Yunhu has nowhere to run. He remembers Da Kuo Zhi's advice: if he's ever in serious trouble, he should find Dongmei.
He makes his way to her establishment, and she doesn't hesitate. She immediately hides him in a secret room.
Dongmei's Quick Thinking
Just in time, too. Pang Sihai and his officers arrive to search the place. Dongmei stands her ground, trying to block them. She even threatens to go straight to Pang Sihai's wife and tell her everything. He isn't fazed and orders his men to search anyway.
Seeing that threats won't work, Dongmei changes her strategy. She signals her girls, who immediately swarm Pang Sihai and his men. They flirt, they distract, and they generally make a huge nuisance of themselves. Pang Sihai, completely overwhelmed and annoyed, finally gives up and leaves. It's a clever move, and it works. Gao Yunhu is safe, for now.
Bad Deals and Bad News
Tang Deyuan's Plans Go Sideways
Tang Deyuan has sold all his property. He's ready to skip town and find Caifeng and his son, Gaya. He tries to pay off Tian Xiaogui to make him disappear, but Tian has other ideas. He presses Tang Deyuan for the location of Lu Changshan's group. Tang Deyuan refuses and throws him out.
As luck would have it, Tian Xiaogui runs right into Lu Changshan. He begs to join the fight against the Japanese. But the man is in no condition to fight. His old injuries are so severe he can't even strike a match. Lu Changshan sets him up in an inn to recover, telling him to stay put.
In the world of shady business, a man named Boss Shao buys Xiao Tielin's old restaurant. The purchase includes a warehouse full of opium. After the deal is done, Shao makes plans to move the drugs.
A Glimmer of Hope
Lu Changshan returns to the hideout, where Wan Fuqing asks about Tian Xiaogui. Lu is firm; he doesn't want the injured man involved in their next operation.
Then, they get some unexpected good news. Instructor Wang arrives and announces that Germany has surrendered. For a moment, Lu Changshan and Wan Fuqing are overjoyed. They hope this means Japan's surrender is not far behind.
A Horrific Turn
The Murder of a Child
The episode takes a very dark turn here. Gaya, just a little boy, is playing in a hallway when Kawano calls him into his room. A short time later, Gaya is gone. Caifeng searches frantically for him, but he's nowhere to be found.
Then, the worst possible news arrives. A body is found floating in the river. It's Gaya. Caifeng and Da Kuo Zhi rush to the scene. It's clear he was strangled before being thrown into the water. When Pang Sihai arrives, Caifeng begs him to find the killer, but he brushes her off.
That night, Da Kuo Zhi bribes Pang Sihai for the truth. Terrified of the Japanese, Pang Sihai eventually confesses. The killer was Kawano, the head of the secret police. Pang admits he saw Gaya in Kawano's room. We learn that Kawano murdered the boy as a deliberate trap. He wants to lure the resistance into a revenge mission. He's using a child's death as bait.
A Father's Revenge
Before he can leave town, Tang Deyuan decides to tie up one last loose end. He burns the opium warehouse to the ground. While packing his things, he gets a phone call from Caifeng. She tells him that their son, Gaya, is dead.
Tang Deyuan is completely destroyed. He travels to Songlin Town and meets Caifeng at Gaya's grave. She pushes him, demanding justice for their son. In that moment, Tang Deyuan makes a vow. He will kill Kawano.
The Aftermath
Missions and Promises
Boss Shao is furious about the fire and confronts Xiao Tielin, who knows nothing about it.
Lu Changshan visits Tian Xiaogui at the inn, bringing him food. Tian is anxious, worried his injury means he'll be left behind. Lu reassures him, promising he will always have a place with the team.
Gao Yunhu, meanwhile, successfully completes his mission, delivering a codebook to Instructor Wang. He then meets with Lu Changshan and tells him what happened to Gaya. He also confirms that Tang Deyuan is now hunting Kawano, seeking revenge. The episode closes with Tang Deyuan at the police station, asking Xiao Tielin for Kawano's whereabouts, while Zhao Qingtian secretly listens in.
