A Snake in the Grass
So, Zhao Qingtian overhears Tang Deyuan asking around for Kawano's location. You'd think this is great news. Zhao Qingtian wants revenge on Kawano for killing his son, Gaya. This is his perfect chance.
But he doesn't take it. Instead, he runs straight to Kawano and snitches on the whole thing. Kawano isn't even surprised. He basically says, "I've been waiting for this." He then tells Zhao Qingtian to keep a close eye on both Tang Deyuan and Xiao Tielin. So much for revenge.
A New Assassin
The good guys have their own plans, though. The higher-ups have sent an assassin named Li Zhenghao to take out Kawano. We see him quietly tracking his target, learning his movements and schedule. He seems professional, which is a nice change of pace.
Tian Xiaogui's Nightmare
A Broken Man
We finally get the full, ugly story on Tian Xiaogui. He’s been having terrible nightmares, and now we know why. After he was captured, the Japanese puppet police tortured him relentlessly. He was completely broken.
Then Kawano stepped in. He had his men inject Tian Xiaogui with a highly addictive drug. Now, Kawano controls him completely. His mission is to find the anti-Japanese resistance and lead Kawano to their base. A doctor visits him regularly to give him just enough of the drug to keep him functional and under control.
Tian Xiaogui is a wreck. He begs Lu Changshan to get him away from all this. He’s terrified of Kawano but also convinced the organization will never forgive him for what he's become.
A Desperate Choice
The withdrawal symptoms are hitting him hard. The doctor finds him in a bad state and makes him an offer. He'll get his next dose of the drug, but only if he brings back Lu Changshan's operational plans.
The Big Meetup
Setting the Trap
Lu Changshan decides it's time to bring Tang Deyuan into the fold. He suspects Tang was the one who burned down Xiao Tielin's opium warehouse, which is a good start. Wan Fuqing and Gao Yunhu are also eager to get Tang's help to kill Kawano.
A secret meeting is arranged at the Dadongbao Bureau. Lu Changshan goes in alone to talk with Tang Deyuan. But this meeting is hardly a secret.
- Wan Fuqing and Gao Yunhu are outside covering the exits.
- A desperate Tian Xiaogui has followed Tang Deyuan there. He sees Lu Changshan enter and immediately calls the doctor to report it.
- Zhao Qingtian’s police are also tailing Tang Deyuan, and they call in the location as soon as he arrives.
The Plan and the Escape
Inside, Lu Changshan gets straight to business. An assassin is coming for Kawano. He needs Tang Deyuan to kidnap Xiao Tielin and force him to give up details on the Japanese troop deployment at Datuziling. Tang Deyuan thinks Xiao Tielin will never talk. Lu Changshan admits it's a gamble he's willing to take.
They don't have much time to argue. Zhao Qingtian and a squad of police swarm the building.
Wan Fuqing and Gao Yunhu spring into action. Gao tells Wan to fire a shot at the front of the building as a distraction while he gets the back door. Tian Xiaogui sees the police raid and tries to charge in, but the police stop him and beat him down.
Lu Changshan and Tang Deyuan successfully escape out the back. A chaotic car chase follows. Wan Fuqing and Gao Yunhu get them into a vehicle with the police right behind. Lu Changshan provides covering fire from the car. Tang Deyuan, now fully committed, asks for a gun and shoots one of the pursuing officers himself. They manage to lose the police and get away.
