The Doctor's Verdict

The episode kicks off right where we left off. Meng Jie shows Dr. Miyamoto the medical files for Joseph Needham. The doctor wants Ding Yi to explain the symptoms from the very beginning. You can see Ding Yi is about to collapse. Outside the door, Gu Yangshan and Xian Biyun are pacing. They're just as stressed as he is.

Dr. Miyamoto finally gives his opinion. He says Needham's condition is for a brain specialist. He can't help. His only advice is to avoid stressing Needham out if they want him to keep working.

The second Miyamoto is gone, the team springs into action. Gu Yangshan, Xian Biyun, and Meng Jie rush Ding Yi into a room to induce vomiting. It's a grim scene. And this is when they discover something wild. To stay conscious for so long, Ding Yi had jammed thumbtacks into the soles of his feet. That is some next-level commitment.

After the ordeal, Ding Yi wakes up and pulls a fast one. He pretends he's gone blind. Gu Yangshan is wrecked with guilt. He swears he'll spend his entire fortune to cure him. Ding Yi finally cracks. He calls Gu sappy and admits he can see just fine. It was all a joke. Thank goodness for that. We also learn Xian Biyun stayed with him all night. She even went to the docks and got his personal belongings back for him. For a moment, Ding Yi looks genuinely happy.

A Bittersweet Farewell

We jump forward two months. Ding Yi has recovered and is being discharged from the hospital. Xian Biyun has a plan. She's arranged for him to take a boat to Hong Kong the next day. She's also trying to get his mother sent there so they can reunite.

But Ding Yi isn't celebrating. He's quiet and depressed. Xian Biyun knows what he's thinking. She fills him in on Takeda. The Japanese military has officially removed him from his post. He's being shipped back to Japan tomorrow to face an investigation. If he can't explain how the intelligence was leaked, he'll be executed.

Ding Yi is still withdrawn. He's worried this is goodbye. He thinks he'll never see Xian Biyun again. She tells him that people who walk the same path are bound to meet again.

Ding Yi's Revenge

Gu Yangshan goes out to grab some food that Ding Yi requested. He comes back to an empty room. Ding Yi is gone.

The Confrontation with Takeda

Ding Yi took a bottle of alcohol and went straight to Takeda's place. He claims he's there for a farewell drink. Takeda is suspicious. He cuts to the chase. He asks who really leaked Needham's code.

Ding Yi tells him the whole truth. The code was never broken. The Military-Statistics Bureau couldn't crack it. So, they devised this entire scheme just to trick Takeda into changing it.

Takeda is furious. He threatens to expose the whole thing to his superiors. But it's too late. He'd been taking medicine, and Ding Yi poisoned his drink with a sedative. Takeda pulls a knife, ready to fight. He's stunned to see that the "blind" man in front of him can see perfectly. Ding Yi doesn't waste a second. He drives the knife straight into Takeda's stomach. He says it's for Hong Yu. And for Old Gu.

The Cover-Up

Ding Yi washes the blood from his hands and flees in a panic. He nearly gives himself away when he flinches at the sight of Japanese soldiers. Xian Biyun appears out of nowhere. She warns him to get on that boat tonight, or she'll physically throw him on it.

Gu Yangshan handles the crime scene. He expertly stages Takeda's body to look like a suicide. He even forges a suicide note in Takeda's handwriting. Before they leave, Ding Yi grabs a box from the room. Inside is a tape recorder. Takeda was planning to record Ding Yi's confession. He never imagined his target would be the one to kill him.

Gu Yangshan is not happy about Ding Yi's solo mission. He tells him his own hatred for Takeda was just as strong, especially after what happened to Uncle Gu. But he thinks they could have found a safer plan. The act of killing hits Ding Yi hard. He starts vomiting. Gu gives him a handkerchief but also quietly thanks him. Ding Yi reflects on everything. He says if Gu hadn't tricked him into this life, he never would have seen any of this cruelty.

A New Mission Begins

The cover-up works. Sasaki believes Takeda died by suicide and doesn't ask any questions. He then approaches Ding Yi with a proposition. He wants "Needham" to be the deputy director of a new code-breaking research institute.

The director of this new institute is Liang Jingyuan. He's also Ye Yin's husband.

Gu Yangshan knows they need to get Ding Yi out of the city now. But Liang Jingyuan arrives unexpectedly. Gu immediately notices flour dust on Liang's collar. Liang casually says he just came from a raid on a flour mill. This guy is sharp. He's already picking up on details Takeda always missed.

In a separate meeting, Xian Biyun talks with her contact, Old Owl. There's a new problem. An allied agent successfully infiltrated the code-breaking institute. But the organization has lost all contact with them. The only information they have is a codename: White Night. The leadership believes Xian Biyun is the best person to get close to the institute. Her new assignment is to find the agent known as White Night.
