Spoiler Alert
Moma Group is a Mess
So, the bank robbery from episode one was just the appetizer.
The main course is Moma Group, a big-shot biotech company. On November 26th, the same day as the bank heist, a top scientist from Moma was killed. His name was Tang Shaorong. A billboard fell and crushed him. The police wrote it off as a freak accident.
But his daughter, Tang Xin, isn't buying it.She says her dad had a premonition he was going to die.He got paranoid after his colleague, Han Song, died a month earlier. Han Song was another executive at Moma. His death was also ruled an accident. An electrocution.
Ding Qi hears this and his cop senses start tingling. He realizes both men died on a loop day. October 25th for Han Song, and November 26th for Tang Shaorong. This is way too convenient to be a coincidence. He goes back to the scene where Han Song died and finds explosive residue. These were not accidents.
A New Player Enters the Game
Just as the police connect the two deaths, they get a video. It's from a mysterious figure who calls themself "Squid."Squid says they're going to kill Moma's CEO, Mo Yuanzhi, next. They also promise to destroy the entire company.
This gets everyone's attention. We learn that Mo Yuanzhi, Tang Shaorong, and Han Song together owned enough shares to control the whole company. With two dead and one threatened, Moma Group is on the verge of collapse. The chief orders a full investigation. Find Squid.
Ding Qi's Past Haunts Him
This case is personal for Ding Qi. An Lan, the woman he has a complicated history with, works at Moma. He's worried about her. She tells him she's made peace with her mother's death and that he should forgive himself.
Then we finally get the full story. Three years ago, Ding Qi was chasing a suspect. It was after school, so he ordered the road in front of the school to be blocked. But the criminal took a different route. An unblocked one. The criminal's car struck and killed An Lan's mother. It happened on An Lan's graduation day. Ding Qi carries a lot of guilt over it. That day wasn't a loop day, so he never got a chance to go back and fix it.
Going Undercover
The New Heirs
Ding Qi volunteers to lead the team protecting the CEO, Mo Yuanzhi. He goes undercover as Mo Yuanzhi's new assistant to get inside the company. He learns Moma is about to start clinical trials for a new project. If it succeeds, it will upend the entire pharmaceutical industry.
The investigation also turns up some new persons of interest.
- Han Yufei: He's Han Song's son. After his dad died, he inherited his shares and is now the second-largest shareholder. He has no job at the company, just a ton of influence.
- Tang Xin: She's Tang Shaorong's daughter. She graduated from college three months ago and works as a low-level researcher at Moma. She's now the third-largest shareholder.
- Yu Shiya: She is Mo Yuanzhi's wife. They don't have any children. If Mo Yuanzhi dies, she gets everything. His money and his controlling shares.
A Quiet Confrontation
Ding Qi runs into An Lan at the office. He tells her he's there to protect the CEO. They share a nice, slightly awkward moment in an elevator. You can tell there's something there.
The protection detail is boring at first. Days go by with no sign of Squid. Ding Qi's team gets restless. One night, he takes them out for dinner. His rival, Duan Zheng, shows up and tries to poach one of his guys. Ding Qi isn't in the mood for it. He leaves early.
He waits for An Lan on her way home to walk with her. She finally asks him the question that's been hanging in the air. Is he nice to her because he feels guilty, or is it something else?
He doesn't answer.
