The Professor and the Protégé
A Look Back
We get a quick jump back to nine years ago. A young Mo Yuanzhi is desperately trying to become a PhD student under the brilliant Professor Jiang Yuwen.Jiang Yuwen isn't interested at first. He flat-out rejects him. But Mo Yuanzhi is persistent. He shoves one of his research papers into the professor's hands. Jiang reads it, likes what he sees, and finally lets him into the lab.He even agrees to take him on as a doctoral student.
Mo Yuanzhi's Version
Back in the present, Ding Qi questions Mo Yuanzhi about his old mentor. Mo's story is pretty different. He says Jiang Yuwen was a genius in the genetics field but also a total weirdo. According to Mo, the professor started trashing all his later research. He accused Mo of taking shortcuts. Mo just thinks Jiang was jealous of his talent.
Things got so bad that Mo Yuanzhi applied to switch advisors. But before that could happen, the lab fire broke out. He also mentions that the police never found Jiang Yuwen's body. The official story in academic circles is that Jiang committed suicide and set the fire himself to destroy his own research data.
The Investigation Gets Messy
A Fake Knife and a Real Death
The episode picks up with the fallout from You Yuxiang's classroom meltdown. Ding Qi quickly figures out the knife You Yuxiang used was a prop with a soft blade. It couldn't have hurt anyone. Fang Lu is still shaken up, but Ding Qi tells her she just did what any cop would do.
Then, some bad news lands. Haoxin tells Ding Qi that Fu Jun is dead. Fu Jun was the delivery guy who got mixed up in things because of a letter. He was so distracted thinking about it that he got hit by a truck and died on the scene.
Everyone is a Suspect
Ding Qi also has a chat with An Lan.She knows about Mo Yuanzhi and Jiang Yuwen's academic beef. When Ding Qi shows her a photo of Ye Kun, An Lan hesitates. She says she doesn't know him, but then says she feels like she's seen him somewhere before.
Yu Peishan does some digging at Qingtengwan University. She gets a copy of the report on the lab fire from nine years ago. The name of the police officer who received the file was Huang Yuan, from Section 1. Remember that name.
Meanwhile, Fang Lu is looking into a suspicious woman from Mo Yuanzhi's speech. The woman was secretly filming Mo and An Lan. She also received a self-destructing text message. It said a murder had occurred at Qingtengwan University.
The Walls Close In on Ding Qi
A Mole in the Ranks
This is where it gets good. Fang Lu gets a call from her boss, Huang Yuan. Yes, the same Huang Yuan from the old fire report. He tells her to keep a close eye on Ding Qi and report anything unusual directly to him. So, we have a mole, and he's been connected to this case from the very beginning.
Duan Zheng is also getting suspicious. He saw the video of Ding Qi's interrogation of Ye Kun and was shocked by the "we're the same kind of people" comment. He tells Yu Peishan to cut off Ding Qi's access to any new information about Ye Kun. Ding Qi, of course, calls her right after and tells her to keep digging.
Yu Shiya's Revelation
The episode ends with a bang. Ding Qi catches Yu Shiya in a disguise, trying to sneak into Mo Yuanzhi's hospital room. He assumes she's there to kill him. She denies it. She says she was just monitoring Mo Yuanzhi, Tang Shaorong, and Han Song. She calls them crooked businessmen who destroyed her family's company.
Then she drops the bomb. She tells Ding Qi that Mo Yuanzhi did something very strange on the morning that Tang Shaorong died. He did the same thing on the morning Han Song died. And he did that exact same strange thing again this morning. She followed him to MoMa to see what he was up to but couldn't get past security. While she was waiting outside, she saw An Lan there, too.
