Spoiler Alert
The Truth About Yuen Suet-kuen
So, Man Wai-sam finally sits Yu Ying-fei and Chan Tsz-kit down. She tells them what’s really going on with Yuen Suet-kuen. Yuen wasn't just taking a break. She was digging into a nasty international scandal. It got so bad that her assistant, Tung Chi-ching, was actually killed over it. This is why Yuen accepted that Torch Award. It was a public performance to make everyone think she was dropping the investigation.
Man Wai-sam Rallies the Troops
Of course, Yuen never actually stopped digging. She just went completely off the grid. Man Wai-sam explains that Yuen will be laying low for a good while. She gives Yu and Chan a clear choice. They can walk away now if this is too much for them. They both say they're staying. They're committed.
With that settled, Man Wai-sam lays out the plan. Act normal. Pretend you know nothing. This gives Yuen the cover she needs. The most important part is to keep Lau Yim and Ma Ka-ming from asking too many questions.
The Battle for SNK News Heats Up
Cathy tracks down Ka-yin for a drink. She basically tells her to stop looking for Yuen. Cathy lays it out cold. Novi was never going to fund a new news agency. The Hong Kong market can't handle another one. Cathy herself is done fighting a losing battle. She thinks they should both just find a new gig. Ka-yin understands the logic. But she can't let it go without getting some real answers. She tells Cathy she's not stopping her search.
George Makes His Move
Mrs. Fong shows up at the SNK News office for a visit. George cuts her off at the door. He tells her the board has spoken. She's not allowed to be involved in company operations until she officially discloses her health condition. Immediately after, a public announcement is released. Mrs. Fong is suspended as chairman of the board. That's a bold move by George.
Mrs. Fong's Counter-Attack
Mrs. Fong doesn't take this lying down. She uses a public platform to put pressure on Man Wai-sam to take her place. Man Wai-sam pushes back. She says she has a more urgent problem. Yuen is her adoptive mother, and she won't abandon her.
Then, Man Wai-sam's lawyer delivers some bad news. Man Wai-sam isn't even on the board. There's no legal way for her to just take over as chairman. George would block it in a second. The lawyer says the only path to power is for Mrs. Fong to go public with her illness. Mrs. Fong flat-out refuses.
A Series of Heartbreaks
Ka-yin finally corners Yuen. She demands to know why she disappeared. Yuen needs to protect Ka-yin from the danger she's in. So, she lies. She tells Ka-yin it was always about money and that she has a side deal with Novi. She crushes Ka-yin's idealism on purpose. It works. Ka-yin leaves, completely heartbroken.
A short time later, Ka-yin posts a video online. She announces she is quitting journalism for good. She also apologizes to her former colleagues who are now unemployed because of her.
A Ceremony Ends in Disaster
Yuen gets out of Hong Kong. She leaves a voice message for Man Wai-sam, letting her know she's still pursuing the investigation. She plans to find new funding in Europe to restart her news station.
Back in Hong Kong, Mrs. Fong tries a new tactic. She decides to hold a formal ceremony to legally and publicly recognize Man Wai-sam as her kin. George sees this as a direct challenge to his power. He decides to attend and brings Ivan Poon along, hoping to use him as leverage against Man Wai-sam.
At the event, Yu Ying-fei gives Mrs. Fong a very sentimental gift. It's a photo from SNK's very first news broadcast. Mrs. Fong is visibly touched. The lawyer starts the official process. He announces that Man Wai-sam will now have the same legal status as family. This includes medical power of attorney and inheritance rights. But right before they can sign the papers to make it official, Mrs. Fong collapses.
Man Wai-sam's Big Decision
George immediately gets on the phone with the newsroom. He orders them to report that Mrs. Fong is fine and that business at SNK is stable. He wants to control the narrative. This puts Man Wai-sam in a terrible spot. The documents were never signed. She has no legal standing. If she reports the truth, SNK's stock will crash, and the entire board will turn on her. But if she kills the story, she's helping George win. She would also be betraying her own principles as a journalist.
To Report or Not to Report
She thinks it through. Then she makes the call. She decides to report the truth.
The Aftermath and the Next Play
The news that Mrs. Fong is in a coma hits the public. As predicted, the company's stock price tanks. George uses the chaos to his advantage. He immediately pressures the board to hold an election for a new chairman. They schedule it for three days' time.
But George isn't as popular as he thinks. The Director of Information Services doesn't like his power grab. He sends Cathy to persuade Man Wai-sam to run for the chairman position herself. Behind the scenes, the news department pulls some strings to get Man Wai-sam a seat on the board. The Director also slips Man Wai-sam some files on key board members. Man Wai-sam starts making calls and lobbying for votes.
That Final Scene
Lau Yim is at the hospital for a medical check-up. While she's waiting for her results, she sees a handbag on the floor. It's moving. She gets closer to investigate and looks inside. She finds a baby with blood on its mouth.
