Episode 2 Recap

Old Flames and New Complications

Tan Siting is back in the country. She meets up with her college best friend, Shu Ya, for a reunion. The conversation naturally drifts toward Feng Rui. They were the campus power couple back in the day. Everyone thought they would make it. It obviously didn't end well. Siting drops a bomb on her friend. She saw Feng Rui that afternoon. He has a son now. The kid is not a baby, either. Shu Ya tells her to snap out of it. She thinks Siting needs to look forward to better opportunities.

The Setup

Feng Rui is having dinner with his son. His mother crashes the meal. She is on a mission to set him up with Wen Peiyan. She makes a flimsy excuse to take the grandson to her place for the night. This leaves Feng Rui and Peiyan alone in the house. The vibe is stiff. They end up washing dishes together just to have something to do. They talk about raising the boy, Lele. Peiyan thinks kids should be allowed to be naughty. They don't need to be so grown-up all the time. Feng Rui finds this comforting. He is trying hard to forget Siting. He is willing to fake it until he makes it.

A Small World

Siting gets a job at a dance school. Fate has a twisted sense of humor because Peiyan works there too. Peiyan spots Siting and says hello. She remembers Siting from their brief meeting at the winery. Peiyan has zero clue about the history between Siting and Feng Rui. Feng Rui’s mother happens to be there as well. Peiyan innocently introduces the mother to Siting. The mother looks absolutely terrified. Siting just stares at her with cold contempt. She gives a polite, fake smile for Peiyan’s benefit and goes back to work.

The Lie

That night, Feng Rui checks on his son. The boy is asleep, clutching a photograph. Feng Rui gently takes it. It is a picture of a girl dancing ballet in the sun. It is Siting. Feng Rui took that photo years ago. We learn the story he was told. His mother claimed Siting gave birth and immediately abandoned the child to go abroad for her career. Feng Rui never got to see her before she left. A voice in his head tells him Siting isn't that kind of person. But his mother insists on this version of events. He still wants an explanation.

The Truth

Siting knows none of this. We see her side of the past. She was deeply in love and pregnant. Then came the emergency. The doctor said the fetal heartbeat stopped. She was rushed into surgery. When she woke up, Feng Rui’s mother was there. The woman was ice cold. She told Siting the baby was dead. She also refused to let Siting see Feng Rui. Siting was weak and devastated. She went abroad to heal her broken heart and focus on dance. She thinks her child died that day.

The Confrontation

Back at the school, Siting runs into Feng Rui’s mother again. The older woman tries her old tricks. She asks if Siting came back for money. Siting laughs it off. She says she forgot about that woman's son a long time ago. She doesn't need their money.
