Episode 9 Recap: Old Flames and Family Secrets
A Ride to Nowhere
Tan Siting is stuck doing wedding prep with Wen Peiyan. It looks exhausting. Then her phone buzzes. It’s a lead on her missing father. She doesn't hesitate. She rushes out of the bridal shop immediately.
Luck is on her side for once. Feng Rui is parked right outside. He gives her a lift to the address. It’s getting late. The temperature drops. Siting sits in the back and can't stop coughing. Feng Rui keeps checking on her in the rearview mirror. You can tell he still cares.
The Day He Left
The car ride triggers some heavy memories for Siting. She thinks back to the day her father disappeared. He had been sighing around the house all day. She went out for groceries and came back happy with a job interview notice.
But the house was empty.
He left a note. It just said he was going for a walk to clear his head. He never came back. That walk has lasted years.
Things got worse that day. Someone knocked on the door. It was Feng Rui and his mother. They were looking for her father. They mentioned someone named Haotian. Siting didn't know it then. But Haotian is Feng Rui’s uncle. That connection runs deep.
The Trap
Siting arrives at the address from the text. It’s a bust. The guy isn't a source. He is a scammer. Siting realizes it’s a setup and tries to leave. The guy gets aggressive and won't let her go.
Feng Rui didn't just drop her off. He followed her. He steps in right when things get ugly. The creep runs away. The stress is too much for Siting though. She passes out right there.
The Scented Sachet
Feng Rui rushes her to the hospital. While she is out, he spots something in her bag. It’s an old scented sachet. They bought matching ones over a decade ago. She still carries it. That hits him hard. It proves she hasn't moved on either.
Siting wakes up. Feng Rui hides. He doesn't want her to see him. She rips the IV out of her hand and leaves. She hails a taxi. As she drives away, she looks in the mirror. Feng Rui is standing alone at the hospital entrance. She has dreamed about this moment. Seeing him back in the country brings up a lot of messy feelings.
Mothers and Uncles
Feng Rui goes home to a headache. His mother is there. She complains about seeing Siting at the bridal shop. She starts badmouthing Siting. She calls her scheming and disgusting.
Feng Rui finally snaps. He defends Siting. He throws a hard truth at his mother. He suggests Haotian’s death wasn't just bad luck. He blames the family environment.
We get the backstory on this Haotian guy. He was Feng Rui’s uncle. His mother died giving birth to him. Feng Rui’s mom felt guilty and spoiled him rotten. The result was a disaster. Haotian became a gambling addict.
The grandfather hated it. He couldn't even eat dinner watching Haotian act like a bum. Feng Rui tried to step in once. He told his uncle to get a grip and work. Haotian just laughed. He mocked Feng Rui for being a "good kid." It’s clear this family has been broken for a long time.
