A Phone Call Changes Everything
Nie Chengyuan just cannot let it go. He calls Nie Xiguang and demands she leave Lin Yusen. He thinks she is too sheltered. He claims she doesn't understand how evil people can be. He is sure she will get scammed eventually.
But Xiguang finally snaps back. She drops a massive truth bomb on her father. She explains the car accident from two years ago. Lin Yusen thought he was meeting her that day. That is why he was on that road. Shao Jiaqi didn't know Ma Nianyuan well back then. Ma Nianyuan went around telling everyone she was Nie Chengyuan’s daughter. That lie caused the whole misunderstanding.
The Pieces Fit
This hits Nie Chengyuan hard. He remembers the aftermath of the accident. Ma Nianyuan did mention it. But she twisted the story. She claimed Lin Yusen was chasing her. She said that pursuit caused the crash on the highway. Nie Chengyuan even helped her dig up info from Sheng Bokai back then. But she never mentioned she was impersonating his legitimate daughter.
The realization makes him furious. He drives straight to Qian Fangping’s house.

Nie Chengyuan storms in. He looks ready to kill. Ma Nianyuan tries to play the good daughter role and washes some imported cherries. Qian Fangping stops her. She senses the mood.

Qian Fangping jumps into action. She leans on his chest and comforts him. She tells him to go home and rest. She promises to "educate" her daughter.

Once Nie Chengyuan leaves, the act drops. Qian Fangping scolds Ma Nianyuan. But she isn't mad about the lying. She is mad about the missed opportunity.
She tells her daughter she should have made a move on Lin Yusen when he was injured. That was his most vulnerable moment. If Ma Nianyuan had been smart, she wouldn't be looked down on right now. Qian Fangping gives a chilling speech. She says women must use timing.
She admits she doesn't love Nie Chengyuan at all. She married her first husband just for a city residency permit. People envied her then. But he died. She had no choice but to serve Nie Chengyuan right when he got rich. She warns Ma Nianyuan to stop looking expensive. They need to look frugal so Nie Chengyuan thinks they don't spend his money.

Nie Chengyuan feels terrible about misjudging Xiguang. He sends a large sum of money to Jiang Yun. He says it is pocket money for Xiguang. Jiang Yun knows something is up. She asks Xiguang about it. Xiguang doesn't want to talk about that toxic family. She pretends she knows nothing.

Lin Yusen’s Escape
The next day, Xiguang gets bad news at work. An assistant says Lin Yusen is on a business trip. Mr. Zhang is taking over his work. Xiguang feels guilty. She thinks she caused him too much pain. She doesn't even have the guts to ask where he went.
Lin Yusen is actually on a road trip. He drove to Dunhuang and Wuwei. He says he is looking at the local solar power industry. But really, he is clearing his head.
He runs into a clean energy exploration team. Their car broke down. He gives them a lift back to the city. They bond over their similar jobs. The team buys him lamb skewers as a thank you. They recommend a cheap, good hostel.
How It All Started
At the hostel, Lin Yusen sees some postcards. He grabs a few to write to Xiguang.
We finally learn why he fell for her. He remembers the first time he saw her. It was at a banquet. His grandpa forced him to go. He hated it and sat in a corner. Nie Chengyuan brought Ma Nianyuan. Guests thought Ma Nianyuan was the heiress. Someone tried to hand Ma Nianyuan a business card.
Xiguang snatched the card away. It was a small, aggressive move. But that spark of rebellion caught his eye. She walked right into his heart in that moment.
