The Manipulation Game

Wu Guohao is working overtime on the manipulation front. He sits Wu Feifei down with some old videotapes. His commentary is toxic. He twists the narrative to make Qu Meng look ungrateful. He wants Feifei to believe the worst.

In another room, Xu Zhiyang is a total wreck. He watches videos of himself with his father. He holds a pair of shoes his dad, Xu Bin, cleaned for him by hand. The tears just keep coming. He truly believes his father is the villain here.

Gao Fei waits outside the villa. He spots Xu Zhiyang leaving and tails him. Zhiyang stops and actually begs Gao Fei for mercy. He is desperate. But Gao Fei doesn't buy the pity party. He tells Zhiyang to wake up. If he cares about the baby in Feifei's belly, he needs the truth. He can't settle for a lie.

Blaming the Dead

The police investigation turns up a belt buckle inside the statue. It looks like it belonged to Xu Peng. Zhiyang recognizes the bird design. It was his father's. But something doesn't add up. Xu Bin was a coward. The man couldn't even kill a fish. Murder seems impossible.

Zhiyang starts to suspect a frame-up. He looks at Wu Guohao. But Guohao is ready for this. He puts on a helpless act. He claims he couldn't control Xu Bin. He lies and says Xu Bin hid Qu Meng's body in the statue as a warning to others. Dead men can't defend themselves. Guohao controls the story. Zhiyang falls for the performance.

Painted Evidence and Red Paint

Guohao hands Zhiyang the so-called "evidence" of his father's crimes. Zhiyang weeps while reading it. Guohao pretends he is going to take it to the police immediately. Feifei steps in. She tells him to give Zhiyang time to think.

The police bring Guohao in for questioning. He plays dumb. He denies knowing anything. But the cops have the gold ball Gao Fei provided. Tech analysis shows it was repainted. It also has cut marks. The physical evidence contradicts Guohao's innocent act.

Guohao decides to play dirty outside the interrogation room too. He sends thugs to Zhang Jing's house. They spray red paint on the door. They write insults. Gao Feng loses his temper. He fights the goons. Zhang Jing tries to help but gets shoved around. Gao Feng goes berserk and chases them off. He feels guilty. He hates that his adoptive mother is caught in the crossfire. Zhang Jing just feels heartache for him.

Breaking Point

Su Min takes Feifei to the morgue. She needs to identify the burned body. It is her biological mother, Li Hongyue. Su Min tries to reach her emotionally. Feifei puts up a wall. She claims she has no blood relation to this woman. She pushes Su Min away. But the act crumbles in the restroom. She breaks down sobbing.

Back home, Feifei watches colorless surveillance tapes. She cries. She can't move past Li Hongyue's death. Guohao tries to push her to go out with Zhiyang. She refuses. The house feels broken. That night, Feifei snaps. She burns all of Li Hongyue's belongings. She smashes a portrait. She destroys everything in a fit of grief.

The Letter in the Shoe

Zhiyang can't sleep. Nightmares plague him. He drives out to a tree in the middle of the night to burn his father's possessions. He picks up the shoes Xu Bin cleaned for him. He finds something inside.

It is a suicide note.

Xu Bin wrote it before he died. He admits to his mistakes. But he sets the record straight. He points the finger at the real devil. Wu Guohao forced him to do everything. Xu Zhiyang reads the words. The fog lifts. He finally sees the monster standing behind him.
