Episode Summary
Wu Fei, a former cop turned consultant, gets a suspicious USB drive. After his office is trashed, he copies the drive and evades pursuers, intending to give the evidence to his ex-colleague, Lu Fan's father. However, he's forced to rescue a kidnapped employee from Li Guokun, during which he's ambushed and buried alive. He escapes, finds Luo Yin also buried, and then sees police at his home, making him a fugitive. Driven by his wife's death, which he blames on Li Guokun, Wu Fei attacks him but is interrupted by Lu Fan's father, who is later found murdered. To expose the true culprits, Wu Fei fakes Luo Yin's identity, goes abroad, and returns. He teams up with Qiao En, who involves Wu Fei's daughter, Wu Keran. Wu Fei, as "Luo Yin," tries to guide Wu Keran, even becoming her therapist. Pressured by Ning Zhen to reveal his backer, Wu Fei receives a Morse code message and commits suicide. Three months later, with the case seemingly closed, Ning Zhen gets a mysterious call, and Wu Keran is visited in prison by an unknown girl.
Spoiler Alert
So, our guy Wu Fei gets his hands on some crucial evidence and gives his client, Du Jun, a call. But Wu Fei, being the sharp ex-cop he is, smells a rat. Something about this whole situation feels off, especially since the client was super insistent that Wu Fei not peek at what's on the USB drive. Curiosity, of course, gets the better of him. Later that night, he swings by his consulting office only to find it completely trashed. Yikes!
After checking out the USB's contents (because who wouldn't?), Wu Fei, smart cookie that he is, makes a copy. As he’s leaving, he realizes he’s being tailed. Quick thinking and a conveniently timed traffic light help him shake off his pursuers. His conscience starts nagging him, and he decides the evidence needs to go to the police. He calls up an old colleague, who also happens to be Lu Fan's father, but Dad is swamped with another case and can't meet right away. While Wu Fei is waiting, he gets a call from Li Guokun. Turns out, Li Guokun and his buddy Zhang Jianmin have kidnapped an employee who had escaped, and now they're using this poor soul to threaten Wu Fei.
To save the hostage, Wu Fei has no choice but to go meet Li Guokun. But before he heads into the lion's den, he manages to pass that copied USB drive to Ning Zhen's mother. Smart move! At the meeting, Wu Fei gets ambushed by Li Guokun's cronies. When he comes to, he finds himself buried alive. Seriously, buried alive! But this is Wu Fei we're talking about; he claws his way out. As if that's not traumatic enough, he discovers someone else buried nearby. He initially thinks it's the missing female employee, but nope, it's Luo Yin. When Wu Fei makes it back to his place, he spots police cars outside. Unsure if they're there to help or arrest him, he can't risk going home. And just like that, with his sudden disappearance, Wu Fei is pegged as a potential murderer.
Now, here’s where it gets really personal. Wu Fei had to watch his wife die from an illness, completely helpless and unable to be there for her in her final moments. The grief and rage boil over, and he blames Li Guokun for everything. This fuels his quest for revenge, leading to that intense opening scene of the series where a mysterious figure in black (yep, Wu Fei) stabs Li Guokun. Just as Wu Fei is grilling Li Guokun about his accomplices, Lu Fan's father shows up, forcing Wu Fei to flee. When he circles back to the scene later, he finds Lu Fan's father has been murdered.
Wu Fei realizes the main trail of clues has gone cold. So, he deliberately leaks information about "Shen Yuan" (Abyss) and intentionally doesn't finish off Li Guokun. He's playing the long game, leaving Li Guokun alive as a loose end to eventually expose the real masterminds and bring them to justice. With no way to clear his own name, Wu Fei returns to where Luo Yin was buried, takes everything that could identify Luo Yin from the body, and decides to assume Luo Yin's identity to stay hidden.
Fast forward: Wu Fei manages to leave the country and officially change his identity. Upon his return, he bumps into Qiao En, who pretty quickly sees through his disguise. The two team up, but things get complicated. Qiao En, unbeknownst to Wu Fei, contacts Wu Keran (Wu Fei's daughter!) and pulls her into their dangerous world. Wu Fei had desperately wanted to keep his daughter out of it. After they capture Jiang Yan, Wu Keran is adamant about confronting Jiang Yan to learn the truth. Wu Fei, having no other choice, appears before Wu Keran as Luo Yin. Of course, Wu Keran has no idea she's face-to-face with her own father and declares she wants to kill Jiang Yan to avenge him.
To stop his daughter from going down a darker path, Wu Fei drags her away. But as they're leaving, Wu Keran spots Qiao En. Not one to listen, Wu Keran later tasers Wu Fei (ouch, Dad!) and heads back to where Jiang Yan is being held. Overwhelmed with guilt and unable to reveal his true identity to his daughter, Wu Fei decides to help her in another way. He opens a private psychology clinic and appears in Wu Keran's life as her therapist, hoping to help her heal from her trauma.
However, Ning Zhen isn't buying any of it. She knows that Wu Fei couldn't have pulled off such a seamless identity swap without some serious help from someone powerful. She presses Wu Fei to reveal who's pulling the strings. Just then, Wu Fei receives a call – a message in Morse code – telling him it's time for everything to end. And then, in front of everyone, Wu Fei commits suicide.
Three months later, everyone believes the case is closed and justice has been served. People are mourning their loved ones. But then, Ning Zhen gets a mysterious phone call. And Wu Keran, now in prison, receives a visit from an enigmatic little girl.
