Double Happiness Episode 5 Recap & Spoilers: A Deal is Struck
The morning after brings immediate regret for Hu Xiaojiao, who is nursing a conspicuous bite mark on her shoulder, a secret she keeps from a still-oblivious Qian Hao. Her guilt from the previous night's events hangs heavy in the air.
Meanwhile, at Xu Kaixin's place, it's a cozier scene. Little Xiaomi wakes up delighted to find her older sister, Dami, and happily scrambles into bed with her. As Kaixin comes to wake them, she overhears Dami sadly telling her sister that there's no room for her at her father Qian Hao's house anymore. While Xiaomi barely knows Qian Hao, Dami lived with him, and the father-daughter bond is not so easily broken. Kaixin gathers her girls and, along with Sister Lili, heads straight to a car dealership for a day of retail therapy.
In a parallel morning, Mei Chengyi is in full dad mode. He gets his two daughters up, whips up breakfast while they get ready, and then rushes them off to taekwondo and roller-skating lessons. As the girls burn off endless energy, an exhausted Mei Chengyi struggles to keep his eyes open while waiting for them.
Back at the dealership, Kaixin quickly settles on a car she likes. There's just one small hiccup: she doesn't have a driver's license. A helpful salesperson assures her they can arrange for someone to drive the car home for her, and she can take the wheel herself once she's passed her test. With that sorted, Kaixin buys the model her daughters fell in love with. The happy family commemorates the moment with a photo, which Kaixin promptly posts online. Scrolling through his feed, Mei Chengyi sees the post and, with a slight smile, gives it a "like."
Qian Hao, meanwhile, is making moves of his own. He brings in designers to convert Xiaojiao's prized walk-in closet into a children's room. Awoken by the noise, Xiaojiao confronts him, but Qian Hao's placating words are empty. Still wrestling with her guilt, she reluctantly agrees to the renovation. Their relationship is further revealed to be strained; ever since a car accident left Qian Hao with performance issues, he cautiously waits for Xiaojiao to fall asleep before getting into bed. Unbeknownst to him, the woman with her back turned to him is often wide awake.
Later, Qian Hao makes another calculated move. He approaches the owner of the commercial space housing Kaixin's cake shop and, by offering to pay 1.5 times the price on top of the penalty for breaking the lease, buys the property out from under her.
Xiaojiao, on edge, calls her good friend Kaili to confirm their alibi for the night she didn't come home. Thankfully, she had prepped Kaili, and their story holds. Her uncle, however, continues to push her to divorce Qian Hao, even suggesting ways to test his loyalty. But Xiaojiao, hopelessly devoted, refuses to leave him or question his feelings for her.
After some thought, Mei Chengyi sends a message to Kaixin. He starts by apologizing for his harsh words the other day and asks to meet her at a Western restaurant. Kaixin discusses it with her friend Li Xiaoxiao before agreeing and setting a time.
At their meeting, Kaixin cuts to the chase. Mei Chengyi lays his cards on the table: he needs her to pose as his girlfriend and is willing to pay her 500 yuan for the trouble. Kaixin agrees, promising she'll do her best to make the charade convincing.
As they work out the details of their story, Mei Chengyi asks what she would say she likes about him. "You're handsome," Kaixin replies bluntly, catching him completely off guard. The stakes for this performance are high. Mei Chengyi explains that his father-in-law, a retired HR manager from a state-owned enterprise, is incredibly detail-oriented. To prepare her, he sends a document full of personal information for her to memorize.
The episode's tension peaks when Qian Hao, putting on a macho front for Qin Sulan, calls Xiaojiao with an arrogant, demanding tone. To his horror, the person who answers is not his wife, but her uncle. Hearing Qian Hao's condescending words, the uncle's face darkens with fury. Panicked, Qian Hao realizes his blunder and rushes out the door, desperate to do damage control.
