Double Happiness Episode 6 Recap & Spoilers: A Fake Romance and Real Stakes
In this episode of "Double Happiness," parenting philosophies clash, a custody battle intensifies, and a fake relationship is deployed as a weapon, leading to unexpectedly complicated feelings.
The episode opens with Xu Kaixin and Mei Chengyi discussing the complexities of raising children in a blended family. Chengyi advocates for treating each other's children as their own, striving for perfect equality. Kaixin, however, holds a more pragmatic view. She believes it's better to aim for mutual respect and kindness, allowing the children to feel they've simply gained a caring new aunt and uncle. Unable to win the argument, Chengyi drops the subject.
Later, Chengyi takes a trip down memory lane, visiting his old university campus. He watches a group of students playing basketball, a wave of nostalgia washing over him. When a player twists his ankle, Chengyi is invited to join the game. He effortlessly sinks a shot, proving he's still got the skills and drawing the admiration of two female students who offer him water. The moment of youthful freedom is cut short by a call from his client, Mr. Liu, pulling him back to the reality of overtime and deadlines—a poignant reminder of the pressures of middle-aged life.
Meanwhile, Qian Hao races to Hu Xiaojiao's uncle's apartment building, only to find himself locked out alongside her. Xiaojiao is baffled by his urgency and has no idea what he might have said to her uncle on the phone to cause such a reaction. With a major project's fate in her uncle's hands, Qian Hao is frantic. His anxiety deepens when neither Xiaojiao's uncle nor her aunt answers their calls, leaving him to conclude that his project is doomed. The stress is compounded when they return home to find Qian Hao's mother, Qin Sulan, sick and vomiting. The sight triggers a sympathetic wave of nausea in Hu Xiaojiao. Taking in the scene, Qin Sulan begins to lament her string of bad luck, wistfully recalling how much better things were with Xu Kaixin.
In what seems like bad news, Kaixin's friend, Li Xiaoxiao, informs her that their landlord is selling the shop space and will be terminating their lease, offering three months' rent as compensation. Xiaoxiao expects Kaixin to be devastated, but Kaixin's reaction is one of pure joy. She reveals that with the rent at 5,000 yuan a month, her offline sales only bring in about 6,000 yuan, while her online business generates a more robust 7,000 to 8,000 yuan. She had already planned to close the physical store when the lease expired at the end of the year, so the early termination is a welcome windfall.
The situation with Qin Sulan takes a dire turn when Qian Hao takes her for a hospital check-up. They learn that her last round of chemotherapy was ineffective and she needs another. The doctor delivers a grim prognosis: she has, at most, one or two years left to live.
This devastating news galvanizes Qian Hao to accelerate his plans to secure custody of his daughter, Xiaomi. He goes directly to Kaixin's cake shop to confront her. Seeing him, Kaixin decides to take a stand. She texts Mei Chengyi with an audacious request: pretend to be her boyfriend, buy a bouquet of flowers, and come to the shop to help her knock Qian Hao down a peg.
Though he grumbles about her vanity, Chengyi complies. As he heads over, Kaixin lays down her terms to Qian Hao. She is no longer the naive woman he once knew; she tells him that before they can even discuss custody of Xiaomi, they must first settle the matter of their 4 million yuan house. At the mention of the property, Qian Hao becomes agitated, insisting that the house and custody are two completely separate issues.
Just then, Mei Chengyi arrives, flowers in hand. Kaixin abandons her conversation with Qian Hao and throws herself into her role, greeting Chengyi with an enthusiastic hug and a kiss. The public display of affection clearly makes Chengyi uncomfortable. The moment they are in the privacy of his car, he pulls out a tissue to wipe the lipstick print from his face.
The episode closes with a glimpse into Chengyi's own family life. His father-in-law is exhausted from looking after his two granddaughters. When he asks where Chengyi is, his daughter Youyou smoothly covers for him, explaining that her father is busy working overtime.
