Double Fugue Episode 20: The Final Confession

With Wang Yayin behind bars, a paranoid Su Shilun fears she will expose him to the police. He immediately begins plotting his escape, instructing his secretary to sell off all his stocks and transfer the assets overseas. His final step is to quickly sell his art gallery. Hearing from Sun Yiming that a potential buyer has emerged, Su Shilun eagerly arranges a meeting.

The "buyer" is none other than Lu Li, who already possesses the evidence needed to prove Su Shilun is a murderer. The meeting is arranged through Sun Yiming. When Su Shilun sees the insultingly low acquisition price in the contract Lu Li presents, he scoffs at Lu Li for overreaching. However, Lu Li came prepared. He counters by asking how Su Shilun would feel about the deal if his overseas assets were suddenly frozen. The threat hits its mark, and Su Shilun realizes he's walked into a trap, hastily leaving the scene.

Later, Qin Yuebai arranges a press conference, supposedly to help Su Shilun. But as he steps onto the stage, he is horrified to see the backdrop is a massive photograph—evidence of him tampering with the brakes on the car of Lu Li's parents years ago. Enraged and cornered, Su Shilun lunges at Qin Yuebai, grabbing her by the throat and demanding to know how she could be so ruthless to her own father.

Qin Yuebai remains perfectly calm. She tells him that after reading her mother's diary, she no longer feels any desire for a father. She recalls a childhood of abandonment, where her pitiful mother suffered endlessly in Su Shilun's shadow. Done with the charade, Su Shilun drops his facade. He screams that Qin Yuebai knows nothing about him, boasting that even if it meant killing someone, he would do it all over again to achieve his goals.

Unbeknownst to him, Lu Li had secretly planted a recording device. Every word of Su Shilun's furious confession is captured. Bao Yan, who witnesses the entire scene, is devastated as she finally sees her father for who he truly is: a master of deception, a ruthless monster, and a complete hypocrite.

Deciding to leave the country, Bao Yan writes a farewell letter to Tang Bei. In it, she encourages him to be strong and brave, to live for himself in the light, and to let go of the shadows of the past. Moved to tears by her words, Tang Bei picks up the phone and calls the police to turn himself in.

In the end, Lu Li successfully avenges his parents as Su Shilun pays for his crimes. With the turmoil over, Qin Yuebai takes over her mother's gallery, determined to run it with integrity. Lu Li stands by her side and playfully asks if she might have a job for him. Having endured so much together, their bond has deepened. Qin Yuebai looks at him sweetly and replies that for the man who saved her life, she can offer him a position as her assistant. The past, like a river, has finally flowed by, and Lu Li and Qin Yuebai are free to begin a peaceful and happy life together.
