Justice Is Mine, Episode 17: Scars and Setups
I’ve got to say, this episode was a whole lot of setup and one hell of a payoff. Things are moving fast. Let's get into it.
Han Kuilong's Medical Vacation
So, Han Kuilong is out of prison. He gets released on medical parole, which is a pretty sweet deal for him. His son, Han Lie, is running the show now. He immediately tells his crew to keep a low profile. No more making a scene.
A politician, Councilor Huang, comes to visit the old man. Han Kuilong refuses to see him. Han Lie steps up and plays the gracious host instead. He's really settling into his new role as the boss. Later, Lin Qian tells Han Kuilong to just rest. She points out that Han Lie has been handling everything perfectly on his own.
The Land Dispute Heats Up
Over in the old town, the elder is sick with worry about the land deeds. Qi Changrong sees his chance. He puts on a show for the villagers. He acts like he's on their side. He even volunteers to negotiate with the government for them.
He stands in front of everyone and swears he will never sell the land. The people are fired up. They all start shouting that they won't sell either. They completely trust him, but you and I know he's playing them.
A Father's Favoritism
Han Lie brings home roast duck for dinner. He mentions it was his late brother's favorite food, too. Then his father, Han Kuilong, does something cold. He sets an extra place at the table for his dead son.
You can see the jealousy all over Han Lie's face. He just can't escape his brother's shadow. He finally gets his father's attention by making a promise. He swears he will get revenge for his brother's death. This is what Han Kuilong wanted to hear.
The Arsonist's Mark
A Clue and a Memory
Lin Qian is still digging for the truth about Shi Ziyang. She goes to his memorial, pretending to be a former colleague. She runs into Tang Xuan there. Lin Qian insists that Shi Ziyang was not a dirty cop.
Then Tang Xuan drops a huge piece of information. She says her investigation led to a new clue about the big fire from years ago. The arsonist is a tall man with a worm-like scar on his right shoulder. Lin Qian freezes. It's obvious she knows who this is.
The Horrible Truth
We get a flashback. Lin Qian was just a little girl when the fire destroyed her village. She was crying by the road. Han Kuilong found her and took her in. He raised her as his own.
Back in the present, she needs to confirm her suspicion. She tells Han Kuilong she wants to buy him some new clothes. It’s just an excuse to get him to take his shirt off. She sees it. The worm-like scar is on his right shoulder.
Her adoptive father is the man who murdered her parents. She manages to keep her composure, but she's completely shattered. Afterward, she quietly takes a small recording device out of her bag. She's planning something big.
Traps and Warnings
Yi Wei's Bad Decision
Things are not going well for Yi Wei in prison. He watches an inmate get beaten badly in the yard. He learns the victim is the brother of a man named Ma Shanbao. Yi Wei feels guilty about something in his past. He offers to help the brother by making a delivery for him. He thinks it will clear his debt.
This is a total setup. Han Lie planned the whole thing. The delivery is illegal. He staged the fight to lure Yi Wei into a trap, and Yi Wei walked right into it.
A Friendly Warning
Da Gama, the other wealthy businessman, pays Han Kuilong a visit. He openly thanks him for the fire all those years ago. He says it's what made them both rich. Then he gives him some advice. He tells Han Kuilong to leave Judge Qin Yu alone. Da Gama warns that the judge has powerful people protecting him. It is not a fight he can win.
The Final Betrayal
Han Kuilong doesn't listen. He has his men follow Qin Yu to a coffee shop. But then he seems to have a change of heart. He orders his top enforcer, Brother Qiang, to stand down. He says he doesn't want any more of his family to end up in prison. Brother Qiang is furious, but he can't do anything. He realizes he's been drugged and is paralyzed.
At the same time, Tang Xuan finally puts it all together. She confirms Han Kuilong was the arsonist. She gets a warrant for his arrest.
Han Lie makes a desperate move to save his father. He drugs him, knocking him unconscious. He packs him into a large crate. He tells Lin Qian to take his father and flee the country. He wants them to go somewhere and live a quiet life.
That night, Lin Qian is at the docks with the crate. She sends Han Lie's men away, saying she'll wait for the boat alone. She is now alone with the unconscious Han Kuilong.
Then comes the twist. She sprays water on his face until he wakes up. He discovers he is tied up. Lin Qian pulls out her recorder. She plays back the conversation she recorded between him and Da Gama. The one where they talked about the fire. She looks at him and lets him know. She knows everything.
