Hunting: Episode 5 Recap and Spoilers
I’ve seen a lot of drug deals go south. But this one was a special kind of disaster. You have a double-cross, a desperate fight, and an explosion. And that was just the opening act. This episode puts everyone through the wringer.
The Double-Cross
The episode kicks off with the deal. Jin Yawan is supposed to be buying drugs from our crew. He carefully inspects the product. Everything looks good. So, of course, he decides to kill everyone and take it for free.
He tells Si Yan Hao to go get his guys from up the hill. It’s a classic distraction. The second Si Yan Hao turns his back, Jin Yawan pulls a knife. He lunges.
But Duo Zai shows up just in time. He throws himself in front of the blade, taking the hit for Si Yan Hao. It’s a mess. While this is happening, Yang Yipeng figures out the plan. He knows Jin Yawan is trying to screw them over. So he makes a move. During the chaos, Yang Yipeng torches all the drugs. He destroys the evidence completely.
Jin Yawan eventually comes to. He’s still trying to kill the injured Duo Zai. Si Yan Hao panics. He fights back to protect his friend and ends up killing Jin Yawan.
The Explosion
A Zhen and Ma Yong arrive on the scene a little later. They find a burned-out car and Jin Yawan's dead body. They see some drugs that didn't burn. They foolishly decide to risk it and grab the leftovers.
Just then, the car explodes. The blast is huge. It knocks Yang Yipeng out cold. Ma Yong is a little quicker on his feet. He hears police sirens in the distance. He doesn't hesitate. He just runs and vanishes into the night.
A Surprise Doctor and a Tense Interrogation
Duo Zai sees how badly Si Yan Hao is hurt. He needs a doctor, fast. He helps him to a nearby pharmacy. It turns out this pharmacy is actually a clinic. And the doctor is Mou Sen.
Mou Sen puts on a white coat and plays the part. He treats Si Yan Hao’s wounds. He even gives him specific instructions to take his medicine on time. It’s a strange encounter. You have to wonder what Mou Sen is really up to.
The police capture Yang Yipeng. He gets taken to an interrogation room with Luo Zhongkui. The two immediately start screaming at each other. The interrogation goes nowhere. Luo Zhongkui gets frustrated. He turns off the recording equipment for a private chat. He tells Yang Yipeng to stop acting like a cop. He reminds him he isn't one anymore.
The Truth About Yang Yipeng
We finally get the backstory we've been waiting for. Years ago, Yang Yipeng wanted to investigate the death of his team leader, Wu Dui. He volunteered to go undercover. He left his entire life behind.
A police superior has to step in between Yang Yipeng and Luo Zhongkui. He tells them they need to work together. Luo Zhongkui is the only person who can take over Yang Yipeng's position in the force. We learn that Yang Yipeng has been secretly looking out for his family all this time. He can't contact them directly. It would be too dangerous. But over the years, his work as an informant has been crucial. He has provided key intel and helped crack several major cases.
Back with the criminals, Ma Yong is worried. He asks what happened to Jin Yawan. Si Yan Hao admits that he was the one who killed him. Ma Yong is secretly relieved he wasn't the killer. But he's still paranoid that someone will talk.
A New Drug Operation
The police get the official cause of death for Jin Yawan. He had a heart condition and had also taken too many drugs. The fight just pushed his body over the edge. The cops raid the crew's rental house, but they find nothing useful. Mou Sen is watching all of this from a distance, staying alert.
The episode then shifts focus to Mou Sen's motivations. We learn Mai Jiamin is Liu Libo's mistress. She's doing it to pay off her brother's massive debt. Mou Sen clearly resents Liu Libo for this. He approaches Liu Libo to talk business.
Liu Libo doesn't just talk. He applies pressure. He demands Mou Sen double his next shipment to 400 kilograms. Mou Sen says that's impossible. He can't produce that much without a totally secure location. He also reveals why he helped Mou Lang. His father will only give him more raw materials if he has Mou Lang helping him.
The next day, Liu Libo delivers. He finds a perfect spot by the sea. It has a tunnel for cover and the temperature is stable year-round. It's ideal for a drug lab. With the location secured, Mou Sen tells Liu Libo where the raw materials are hidden. Liu Libo then gets Liu Bingqiang to arrange a refrigerated truck. They plan to move the materials disguised as a normal shipment.
